Stephen A. Erickson, emeritus professor of philosophy, passed away on September 20 at the age of 83 of Parkinson’s Disease.

Philosophy was more than an academic discipline for Erickson; it was his love. He told Pomona College Magazine in 1996, “I chose philosophy because I can’t remember a time when the question of what life meant didn’t obsess me.”

Never heard of this late educator--my bad, of course--but since youth in the '60s I've too been haunted by a corresponding wonder of "what life mean[s]"; indeed, those who seldom ruminate on that weighty question (alas, the bulk of the Americans I casually encounter in checkout lines, on park benches, in the stands at sporting events, etc.) suggests to me disturbingly shallow thinking on their part.

Appreciate the posting, Michael.
