Offhand, the only episode I can remember from childhood (I THINK it was from "Lost in Space," anyway) was the one where a teen girl gets trapped by some ray with solid, transparent walls; it then pulls her inside the enemy spaceship. (Please ID if you can.)

Veteran actor Mark Goddard has died at the age of 87. The sad news was shared by former LOST IN SPACE co-star and friend Bill Mumy on Facebook. “A truly beloved friend and brother to me for 59 years,” he wrote.. “I knew this was coming for the past few months. Shortly after a great phone chat he and I had on his 87th birthday in late July, I became aware that I would most likely never see or speak with him again. The last words we exchanged were ‘I love you.’”

Although best known for playing Major Don West in the sci-fi TV classic LOST IN SPACE, Goddard also appeared in other series like THE RIFELMAN, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, GUNSMOKE, PERRY MASON, THE FUGITIVE, THE MOD SQUAD, QUINCY M.E., BENSON, AND THE FALL GUY. He could also be seen in films like Blue Sunshine, Roller Boogie, and the 1998 film adaptation of Lost in Space.

Goddard’s career also included daytime dramas. In 1981, he played Ted Clayton on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and in 1982, he played Lt. Paul Reed on THE DOCTORS. And from 1984-86, he played Derek Barrington on GENERAL HOSPITAL.

Goddard is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and their children Melissa, Michael, Caleb, and John. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

Actor Mark Goddard, known as Major Don West on all 84 episodes of the classic TV series "Lost in Space," died October 10.

His wife, Evelyn, wrote on social media, "I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th. Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure."

"He received excellent care at the beautiful Pat Roche Hospice Home," she went on, "and was able to die peacefully and with dignity. His children and I had the chance to express our love and say our goodbyes. I’ll never know how I deserved to spend 33 years with such a loving, gentle, handsome man who made me laugh so often."

Goddard's "Lost in Space" co-star, former child actor Billy Mumy, wrote, "R..I.P. to Mark Goddard. A truly beloved friend and brother to me for 59 years. I knew this was coming for the past few months. I liked the Lost/Space episode where Goddard/Don West woulfd say "Smith, what is the meaning of this?!"

That one and the one where he said "Smith, get away from that control panel!"

The thing I loved about the late Goddard's character on Lost in Space was he seemed like the only one on that flying saucer who recognized Dr. Zachary Smith as being the irredeemable scoundrel that he was (as so exaggeratedly portrayed by the late Jonathan Harris); I mean, Billy Mumy's "young William" bought every lie the old guy peddled hook, line and sinker.

Well, on second thought, I guess the robot was onto Dr. Smith's slyly nefarious ways, too.
