Gov. Kathy Hochul's father, John Courtney, dies at 87

ALBANY – Gov. Kathy Hochul’s father, John “Jack” Courtney, died of a brain hemorrhage Wednesday night in Florida. He was 87 years old.

Hochul learned of his passing while on a three-day solidarity mission to Israel, and in a handwritten note she left on the Western Wall on Thursday, wrote: “I pray for my father, who cherished his visit to this Holy Land, and who passed during the night.”

Courtney had been a longtime resident of the Buffalo area.

A few months before Hochul was born, in 1958, her family had lived in a trailer near the Bethlehem Steel plant, where Courtney did clerical work at night and attended college during the day. A father of six children, Courtney later moved the family to a working-class home in Woodlawn. The family was known for service-minded, charitable endeavors, and Courtney raised Hochul in a devoutly Catholic household.
