No shortage over the decades across America of college players killing someone(s) in their off-field lives...but I wonder if this alleged offing of a teammate is unprecedented in American gridiron history.

Indeed, that University of Virginia case was just last year, and was a multiple murder, too! More proof that my aging memory is...aging.

What's next--a player killing a teammate after blowing a play that kept their team out of a bowl game? (Although even THAT wouldn't seem quite as crazed as that cheerleader-mom murder plot from quite a few years back*, I guess.)

Let's face it, the headlines trump the stories every time. Like a
school shooting for example. To be given that honorable title
all that's needed is someone to be murdered on school property.

There's a headline in the news almost every year around Super
Bowl time, usually about one friend killing another over a 25 cent
bet. Sure, they watched the game together and they really did have
a small bet on the game and may even have argued over it at some
point. But it is not the real reason for the killing. It's something that's
been coming for some time. They don't embellish the story to give
it some oomph. Just the opposite, they leave out all facts except
for the 25 cent bet.

People love to get all complicated with reasons for murder. I
remember back when 'road rage' as an expression first hit the
scene. There were letters to the editor in the paper every day
with people asking why so many killings on the road. A lot of
different answers were published. But only one made sense
to me. Some guy wrote explaining road rage this way: "Well,
there's a lot of rage these days - and there's a lot of people on
the road."

Sorry, meant to say about school shootings and college
athletes going at it, it's the same as that guy's definition
of road rage - there's a lot of kids killing each other every
day and there's a lot of kids in school. It's just another place
to die.
