Ice hockey players in the UK will have to wear neck guards when playing after The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) said it was updating its player safety protocols. The changes come after Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson died when a blade struck his neck in what has been described as a freak accident. Johnson, the Panthers number 47 suffered a serious cut to his neck which was caused by an opponent's sakte in the 35th minute of a Challenge Cup game against Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, October 27, 2023.

I've always been amazed such accidents don't happen recurrently in the NHL and every minor league; those blades are frequently sharpened (sometimes between periods even), and thus are rather sharper than some spectators realize.

People are saying it was not an accident, the guy purposely kicked this
man in the throat. Video is out there. It does look suspicious.

South Yorkshire Police have today confirmed they are still looking into the tragic death.

The force said: "Since Saturday, detectives have been carrying out a range of enquiries including reviewing footage, talking to witnesses and seeking the advice and support of highly specialised experts to seek to understand the circumstances surrounding what happened.

I can't ice skate, have never played hockey, and don't watch it. That
being said, I don't think the kind of leg kick that the man did is
something that happens in hockey. Too me, that isn't a man who lost
his balance or who got caught up by some weird momentum. It's a guy
who deliberately made a high leg kick.
