The late poet laureate of CBS News wasn't merely good;
Charles Osgood's reporting-in-verse indeed stood
For decades as solid as oak, or even denser wood.
Lesser broadcasters might also rhyme their newscasts, if they could;
Yet it would never rank with all those sterling words from Osgood.

I suppose you know that his last name was Wood, so your poem is even
more on point than you thought it was.

I worked for Osgood for a short while. When they assigned me as his
radio producer, I'd long respected his work and really wanted to like
him. Unfortunately, that passed rather quickly. It was a Mon-Fri job
with regular hours, rare in a 24/7 newsroom. I even had my own office.
I asked off after about three months and happily went back to the
newsroom with its wretched hours and terrible conditions.

My condolences to those who will miss him.

P.S.: I wouldn't call him a poet. Even Osgood didn't call himself a
poet. He said he wrote doggerel.

....looking that up earlier was where I learned that
his real name was Charles Osgood Wood III.
Brad Ferguson mentioned long ago that Osgood had
some old-money forebears...I had wondered but never
researched whether he was connected to the publisher
James R. Osgood.

(Kevin Bacon I believe is from the
Allyn & Bacon Bacons).
