I find it funny when people bitch about certain holidays becoming more
and more commercial over the years - and every new year is worse than
the one before. It's funny because to me any holiday is commercial the
day it became one. Some are simply more successful than others but
they're all commercial in some way hoping to get their foot in the door.
Especially if it's a religious holiday. These people are celebrating the
existence of their God. If they really believed in that God, why would
they need a holiday to prove it?

I for one do not care if she/it/whatever is a troll or not. I respond more
to the post than the person who wrote it. I did not respond to this
particular post directly because I didn't find it interesting. Had I
found it interesting I would seized the opportunity to respond with
blather of my own. But I did not find it interesting so am responding
to you instead of to Judith directly.

The really big holidays mean time off from school, even work when
your school days are over. There can only be so many holidays. Too
many days off is no good for the work force. Give them too many days
off and they may never come back. That's why bars close a few hours
each night (in most places) - to insure that workers will be in decent
enough shape to make it in the next day. Halloween was always my
favorite holiday. Driving cab I watched it take over New Year's Eve as
the most lucrative night of the year. People love dressing up and
pretending to be something they're not. Or something they really are.
Whatever, holidays are interesting in a variety of ways.

Hanukkah, as an alternative to Christmas.

I enjoy wearing dresses, too, and as hot as it gets in South Carolina
cotton dresses and skirts are quite comfortable. Having said that, I
remember when girls were not allowed to wear slacks, much less blue
jeans, to school. (Shorts were never allowed.) It was a thrill to not
be *required* to wear dresses or skirts. I still did, sometimes. :)

Also depends on your figure. I know one woman for 30 years and never
saw her in anything but slacks. Legs were disproportionately large.

Another, I've only seen a couple of times in a dress but in warm weather
will wear shorts. She is 70+ but a lot of 20 yo's would love to have
legs like hers.

In theory, they are public institutions. They are owned and operated by
the people and they provide a public service. They provide their space
and those services as a much lower cost than the government does. So
long as they are using their money for good I see no reason to tax them.
It is another matter when they start making megabucks and spending it on
mansions, luxury cars and private jets.

But when they spout politics from the pulpit, or promote restrictive
legislation, then they should be taxed, and heavily.

I have to disagree on that. We live in a free society with freedom of
speech and freedom of religion. We can't punish them with taxes because
we disagree with what they are saying. Taxing them for preaching
something we disagree with is tantamount to fining them for not thinking
correctly.

While some churches preach some pretty vile stuff, others are preaching
peace and tolerance. We can't allow some of them to operate tax free
while taxing those we oppose. Hell, things could turn around and the
majority could be electing a repressive conservative government that
would turn the tables and tax the hell out of those who express leftist
views. It can work one way or the other, and one thing you can count on
is that public attitudes with shift back and forth.

The way it was set up centuries ago was fine. Like most things, it has
become abused by a few. The mega churches and high living pastors are
far different than the village church a century ago.

Can limits be set? Percentage of income? Pastor can drive a Chevy but
not a Mercedes 500?

Maybe the blame should go to the suckers that support them from their
hard earned wages.
