I plan on watching nasa youtube very soon to watch the asteroid Dart mission.

Even if he still remembers everything he learned to earn
the CS degree, it's all ancient history now.
Computers have evolved so much in the last 25 years but he didn't evolve
with it. "If you don't use it, you'll lose it." If he had kept his job
with IBM, he might be a very worthy computer professional now.

A Computer Science degree provides you with the fundamentals of
computing, independent of fashions in GUIs, programming languages,
or any other ancillary hardware or software. You're mistaking using
a paintbrush for being a painter.

The basics have not changed. For sure,
there are always new major application
classes (encryption, rendering, &c),
but list-linking, sorting, real
approximations, &c) remain as always.

What has evolved (and still evolves)
considerably are the applications.

Hardly anybody outside the discipline knows what's actually taught in
Computer Science classes.

I think some programs are being watered down. About 25 years ago
they were starting to introduce "cabling boxes together" into the
networking class at my alma mater because the students weren't
interested in packets and collisions. They felt the existing
material wasn't going to help them get jobs in IT.
