You can't mix anything onto tape without a mixing board. Just plugging
the instruments into ancient amplifiers, cranking them up and hitting
"record" on a cassette player doesn't cut it.

I helped build a recording studio at a vo-tech school in Memphis my
senior year in high school.

The equipment John talks about doesn't even come close. I'm sure he was
thrilled they made a lot of noise and he could turn some knobs and hey,
reverb! Crank it up, it sounds cool! Uh huh. Sounds like exactly what
it is: a went nowhere basement band.

John Barleycorn was a heck of a good album, and
both Low Spark and Shootout were genius. All of
Winwood's best work was with Traffic, with the
exception of *Can't Find My Way Home*, which
sounds a lot like Traffic, but diminished because
of the lack of Chris Wood's woodwinds.
