How about the fan in the exhaust hood over my stove?

LOL, I don't think that's what Joan meant.

The exhaust fan works different from a ceiling fan. I know what Joan is
talking about. I installed a small ceiling fan on my (much larger than
the photographed) kitchen ceiling, and when it's set to anything more
than "low", it really messes with the burner flame.

I've been in a Galley kitchen in a 1930's house with a fridge and stove
where the stove is in this photo; nothing else on that wall other than a
door to the dining room and a door to the cellar. The other wall was a
60" wide cabinet with a double sink, and a tiny bit of counter space to
either side. That was a tight kitchen, but workable.

Ah, Greg, you know that's my era! If it were my kitchen, I'd have the
vintage appliances to boot. It's only a "grease trap" if you don't know
how to clean. Of course, one could install a vented range hood. I put
a range hood in my kitchen, but I never finished the wiring. Nothing is
disgusting or greasy.

The fan whirls directly above a burner.

I should put a fan in the kitchen and see what it takes to disturb the
flames on the stove.

An AC in the kitchen is a pretty cool idea. I can't do something like that because it would be too radical.

It gently pulls air upward, it doesn't push it downward.

If it's a decent fan, I think you'll find that it doesn't take much. I
regretted the choice of ceiling fan in my kitchen. The fan is nice to
keep me cool, but it has to go off (or on low) when most anything is
cooking.

It depends on which direction the blades on ceiling fans are turning. In warm months it's typical for the fans to be pushing the air downwards. In winter months, the blades are pulling the cold air up towards the ceiling and pushing the warmer air down along the ceiling. On this rock, we don't need a winter setting. I don't recall ever reversing the direction of our fans.

When I first moved here there was a ceiling fan in the dining room.
WTH? Who wants a ceiling fan over the dining room table?

I immediately moved it to the living room ceiling where it was useful.
Still there, still useful.

I have no use for a ceiling fan anywhere... I simply adust the louvers
of our Central Air Vents. I do have a small table fan that ocilates,
I also have a large stand fan that ocilates... I use those fans when
painting to disapate the fumes, I ocasionally use those fans in the
basement. We have a three speed exhaust fan in the kitchen over the
stove, sends aromas outdoors. I find ceiling fans blowing on my head
very annoying.

I would not put one in a kitchen but we have one in our family room and
one in the TV room. The are great for keeping the air moving and cooling
things down enough that we rarely have to turn on the AC.

I always have the fans directed downward. I never think to change their
direction, but I never use them in the winter. I think I'll take your
suggestion next summer, but modify it; I'll leaving the kitchen ceiling
fan on "updraft", and see if that affects the burner flame. If not,
I'll call that a "win", since I'll at least have some air movement in there.

Save one house, I think every house that I've lived in (moved several
times growing up) had a ceiling fan above the dining room table. Of
course, none of these were the original ceiling fixture in those rooms.
I can't say when those were in favor.

Aside from the exterior, attic, and cellar light fixtures (many of which
are original to the house), the only light fixture that I haven't
installed is the ceiling fan in my dining room, which was already here.
The fan is rarely used, but I haven't found a nice antique chandelier
for that room yet. I wouldn't want it to blow dust into the food.

I don't want a fan blowing over the food on the dining room table. I
have them in the bedrooms and living room, as well as the lanai. Nice
to have in hot climates.
