I thought that you posted in the past that you are anti-youtube.
Perhaps I'm think of someone else.

Lines are all over-head here, and the last tech told me that the copper
is over 60 years old, and should have been replaced years ago. They
won't ever do it. He found a new pair of wires to put me on, and the
brief scratchy issue that I had during rainstorms was resolved.
Fortunately, the land line comes in loud and clear.

Hopefully you've figured it out well! I think the iPhone interface (and
newer Mac computers) is more friendly for a new smart-phone user.

We had an old accordion at the antique mall in a case for a long time.
It was listed for $150. A guy low-ball offered $75, and the mall owner
said "sold!". He later told me, any chance you can sell an accordion,
SELL IT! haha

My grandfather replaced a 1940's coal furnace, converted into natural
gas, around the time I was born. He tried to call the HVAC tech in the
next year for inspection, but he told him that it's not necessary for
new models, and only call if there was a concern. That was nice of him,
he could have just taken his money annually. If the chimney is still
used for any appliance, home owners should check the clean-out in the
cellar annually.

Me, I like to do things myself. I threaded and installed all of the
black iron plumbing for gas in my house myself. I had a licensed
plumber come and inspect it. He charged me $75 for the service call,
and maybe another half hour of work on top of that. Several of the
connections had to be tightened when he pressure-tested it. I learned
from that... any time I call a professional, I watch them and learn, so
I don't have to call someone next time. He'll answer a question for me
over a quick phone call, at no charge.

Yes, typically 3 of 4 walls in an apartment building are adjoined to the
structure; only one cold outside wall. Some heat is shared between
units. In town houses, that's also an improvement from single-family
homes, with two shared walls. Even with that heat bonus, I'd still
prefer my neighbors to be further from me.

Yes, lower humidity is nice. The few doors in my house that swell in
the summer are all well-functioning now. Perhaps I should plane them
down next spring (again). We've had rather wet weather here. Cold and
rainy... I wish that I could send the rain your way.

Burning leaves is never a good idea. You probably know this, but a thin
layer of leaves left on the ground is far more environmentally friendly.
It retains water and not only helps to prevent flooding, but it helps
the water tables, especially if you've had a dry season.

Seems to be a running joke. I'm one of the few that will sit and listen
to Slovenian style polkas. I used to listen to them with my
grandmother. If I went to a polka dance at the SNPJ, there might be a
"larger than RFC" age gap between myself and the other attendees (likely
45+ yrs difference).

Before you ask, SNPJ: https://snpj.org/about/history-of-snpj/

I know that most people, including me, hate bagpipes, but the
accordion issue is new to me.

I would have sworn this was German or Austrian:
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxIoCAtI-Eo>

But it's Slovenian.

Heh. Chimney. How quaint. Both our furnace and our water heater

Probably me. That was only when I used dial-up and I never bothered
with youtube - took too long to load.

I know the "basics" of using it for phone calls.
All the luxuries of a smart phone will come in time.
Soon, I'll be able to post pics here again.

I used a flip-phone for about 7 years. Very easy.
The smart phone is a different animal.

Bit different setup with my apartment.
- East walls, all outside walls
- West walls, all outside walls
- South side - 1/3 outside walls
- North side - 1/3 outside walls

As I live in an elevated 1st floor apartment:
- my floors have an unheated basement below
- my ceilings are insulated by the 2nd story apartment.

Try this first:
Take off those doors when it's dry and they work fine, seal tops and
bottoms with 2 coats of anything - paint, varnish, wood sealer.

This usually fixes indoor swelling issues.

As far as personal tools goes, the smart phone must be the king of them all.. For most kids, it is their only personal computer. It should not be called a "phone" since most people these days don't spend much time using the phone function. "Tricorder" might be a good choice.

If it's paint, 2 *thin* coats.

I've been enjoying painting for the last week and
a half or so. I've gotten to play perfectionist,
caulking all of the cracks around all the trim, thin
(and thicker when rolled on) coats of primer (I
love that cheap-ass Kilz2). I managed to score a
5 gal bucket of barely off white (in a gray way)
nice Behr flat for $45.
We're taking off all of the doors, and I'm stripping
paint off of hinges, and heating registers that are
oddball sized and can't merely be replaced. Years
of schlock painting by previous homeowners is
being corrected. Paint on hinges and outlet covers
is maddening.

we've been restaining the house, it was getting
pretty bad. some spots had lichen and moss growing
on it. other areas completely cracked and needed
protection. hope this is the last time i have to
do something like this. it's a lot of work just to
get all the prep work done, and then each board
needs the edges cut in with a brush before i can
roll it.

three more days of work and i should be about
half way done, may not get it all done this fall
but at least the worst of it will look much better.
