In Tasmania, apart from our neighbour's cow, we only ate meat from a
butcher who sold free-range meat. When we moved here, we couldn't find
a butcher like that and decided to stop eating meat altogether. I'd
already stopped eating meat for years in the 80s, on my own. But I'd
also started again.

I work across the hall from a home inspection business. The things
these guys see sometimes are pretty outrageous but really only affect
the decision of the potential home buyers who hire them. I saw a
picture where someone had actually drilled a hole through the
bathtub/shower surround and installed an outdoor garden spigot to
connect to the plumbing so they could run water in the tub. The chrome
faucet fixture in the bathtub had stopped working. It probably only
needed a new cartridge, at most a $500 repair job by a licensed plumber.
Their redneck repair will cost a lot more for a potential buyer to fix.

When I stopped by on Friday afternoon, John had speakers wired into his
front porch ceiling, playing music on a low volume, Lol. Not "cheep

Some things are. Some things, it's just not worth planning that way.
Just make them cheaply and in volume, and you'll sell a ton of them.
Most people would rather buy a $15 keyboard than a $50 keyboard.

I'm not so different. I had a $300 microwave. It lasted (IIRC) nine
years before the interior paint started flaking off. I replaced it
with a $100 microwave. I figured if it lasted three years, I was
even. The $300 microwave was nicer, had some good features that the
$100 microwave didn't have, but I get along ok with the $100 one.

Probably best that you tossed the chipped-paint unit. I had my father's
old Microwave oven in storage the cellar, and my step
great-grandfather's microwave oven had just kicked the bucket, so I gave
it to him. Well, the peeling paint on the interior had rusted through
underneath, and it was sparking not look afterward, with a small hole
through the metal. Oops.

I don't know about them being engineered to fail. I suspect that it is
more about being designed and engineered to be manufactured as cheaply
as possible because people care more about price than reliability.

We've installed many LED bulbs and fixtures, over several years none
have failed. We have three incandescents and two flourescents in our
house, all others are LEDs. When the incondescents and flourescents
no longer work they will be replaced with LEDs. For outside lighting
LEDs beat all others, I especially like the on at dusk and off at dawn
options, and the fact that LEDs cut our electric bill by more than
half. And now there are countless decorative styles. We have two
ancient brass fixtures outside at our front door, was always a PIA to
replace those bulbs, had to practically take the entire fixtures apart
and needed a ladder to reach. Now we used on at dusk/off at dawn LED
bulbs. they work great, so many times I see peoples front door lights
on all day.
