turned out excellent yesterday with garlic,
onions, potatoes, mushrooms, carrots. after a
few hours on high to get it cooked through we
turned it to low to let it go for a few more
hours. mushroom gravy to finish. side was
squash, dessert was chocolate cake but none of
us had any as we were happily full from the
other things (i'm going to have cake for break-
fast :) ). the meat was tender enough to use
a small spoon.

today we're doing another chuck roast (they
both wouldn't fit along with all the other things
in one batch) so Mom can have stuffing and mashed
potatoes. it will probably start with garlic and
onions.

my sister had never seen a roast done in a
crock pot before. we don't have a big roasting
pan anymore so we had to do it this way or use
the oven. Mom's ok with the crock pot so that
was how we went.

I always thought that ground beef was much easier on the teeth.

They will turn even a piece of shoe leather beef into a super tender, falling
apart, dish.

Has your sister that has never seen a roast done in a crockpot been living
on Mars?? :o)

Chuck roast is usually well marbled but it does benefit from low, slow
cooking. A crock pot is excellent for this.

Probably used to a different type of pot roast which is roasted and
sliced. We recently had this discussion when I cooked a chuck roast in
the crock pot.

Yes, chuck has enough marbling to make it tender with little effort. But a
bottom round roast with pretty much zero marbling can be turned into a
very tender dish given time.

she was used to more of a dry roast which ended up
being too dry for her preferences. i am quite ok with
either method and don't much care which as it is the
flavor that is most important to me.

it was excellent again. :)

i don't know! but she's certainly enjoyed it the
past few days. mostly, not having to cook herself much
at all. :)

it's been nice for me too, since she wanted to do the
dishes tonight.

we argue about it at times because we both enjoy it. i'm
not sure i could say LOVE but it isn't that bad of a chore.
we also both enjoy shovelling snow (and we don't own a snow
blower).

my least favorite chore is mowing the lawn. good thing
there isn't much left any longer.

In my house you drop in a pod and push a button

It was not a big deal but at about 55 yo I discovered how nice a snow
blower can be. We averaged about 48" a year.

My neighbor with riding mower did it most of the time in my last years
in CT. Did not bring the mower here, I pay to have it done.

we don't have room for a dishwasher here as there isn't
much cupboard space and i've also had dishwashers do bad
things to glassware.

I've heard that but I can show you 20 year old glassware that is washed
often and looks perfect. May have been people using crappy or too much
detergent.

Or could be the type of glass. I had a set of glasses which frosted up
badly after a few years, but other glassware, washed at the same time,
has remained undamaged.

My MiL's glasses were all pitted from the dishwasher.

I've been putting my wine glasses in the DW for several years and
there's no sign of damage. However, I do use the more expensive
detergent pods that advertise that they are safe for glassware.

Our time and sanity are more important than a bit of glassware.

songbird doesn't have a dishwasher so it's rather a moot point. :)

The old-style powdered dishwasher detergent could be pretty bad about
etching some glassware or making inexpensive glassware turn cloudy over
time.

When I used powder, a pyrex measuring jug became unusable due to etching.
Ed and I use Cascade Platinum and although I don't use my Riedel wine
glasses very often, I feel that they are safe in the DW.
The wine glasses I use daily, are high quality and after hundreds of
washes are still perfectly clear.

Our wine glasses are run-of-the-mill quality and are also still

Maybe the wine protects them. Stop those sugary soft drink and protect
your glassware by drinking wine.
