My GE Profile PDWT180R10SS started not draining water. I ran it a few times to see if anything drained and it doesn't.

I felt around the filter and the top came off so that I can get my hand in it, but there isnt much significant in it.I took tiny amounts of twigs out and ran it again with some white vinegar in it to see if I had cleared any of the blockage. It still doesn't drain

BUT

Then the front left corner started leaking just by the float/water inlet valve.

Is this an obvious problem? Because to me it looks like two opposite problems, not draining AND leaking near the water inlet??

If it gets enough water in there, it has to go somewhere. If the water
inlet is the lowest place it can escape that will be it. Fix the pump or
plugged outlet hose or connections.

https://applianceassistant.com/Dishwasher-Repair/Dishwasher-Not-Draining.php

I have an occasional problem with the water inlet valve leaking a tiny
bit, probably due to crud from old pipes getting caught in the valve
seat. The symptom is that the bottom very slowly fills with water,
finally running out the door when it gets enough deep enough. Usually
this will be hours or days after the last use. The temporary solution is
to start the dishwasher. It sucks out all the water, which goes down the
drain, then starts to fill the dishwasher. I let that happen for several
seconds, which usually clears the grit from the seal, then push the
first and last panel buttons at the same time to cancel the cycle. I
then repeat the pump out process but stop it before the refill cycle
starts, to leave it empty. Then check an hour later to make sure the
problem is gone for the moment.

A problem I omitted to mention is that the controls are on the top and horizontal with the counter 2mm above them! So I cant access them while the dishwasher is running.

Diagnosis sounds daunting!

Can you heat the pump trying to pump ? If so either the inlet
to the pump is blocked or the pump has failed internally and
can't pump.

If you can't hear the pump pumping, either pump has died
or the electrical connection to it has come unplugged or
the logic card has seen the triac fail etc.

More likely that your repeated attempts to see why it isnt
emptying has seen the water level get too high because
the pump isnt pumping.

Not necessarily a problem.

Not really, just check for the obvious possibilitys and elimate them one by
one depending on whether you can hear the pump trying to pump or not. .

This diagnosing is getting more difficult than I thought. i am not sure what a pump sounds like, where this unit is very quiet at the best of times. And I can't access the controls to turn it off while it is running if anything is amiss. So I am a bit reluctant to turn it on and let it run through a whole cycle with this leaking at the bottom! I wonder whose genius idea it was to put the controls on the top so that they can't be accessed while the unit is running IF the unit is mounted under a counter surface?

I will say that I do normally hear gurgling coming out of the sink when dirty water is being expelled from the dishwasher and I havent heard ANY gurgling recently at all. I thought this meant a blockage is preventing the pump from turning on but yes, it would also mean a non-operational pump.

I AM used to a blockage being large amounts of gunge and crud in the filter basket, so where the basket is largely empty, does that necessarily mean that the pump is not pumping?

There must be enough extra hose and wiring to let you slide it out a few inches. The installers
would've needed the excess to put the machine in.

This video shows you how to check that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4p5vZW_LWY

You don't need to do that and you can move the dishwasher
out a little to get at the controls.

You don't need to do that as the video shows, cancel the whole cycle
and initiate an immediate pump out to check what is happening with
the pump. You have to let the dishwasher start washing before you
can cancel the whole cycle and see if the pump is running as it shows
more clearly at 2:20

> I wonder whose genius idea it was to put the controls on the top so that

Presumably that is someone's idea of what looks better and protects the
controls from being damaged by kids zooming around the kitchen on a
small bike etc.

> I will say that I do normally hear gurgling coming out of the sink when

That just confirms what you already know, that the dishwasher isnt
emptying.

> I thought this meant a blockage is preventing the pump from turning on

Yes, but the blockage may be further inside if the filter didn't get put
back fully and some stuff got past it.

First thing to check is whether the pump is working and the video
shows how to do that at 0:50

Ignore the first bit about the garbage disposal at 0:30, that won't be
the problem with yours because yours has worked fine in the past.

If the pump is working, it would be worth snaking the drain line
as he shows at 1:30 because that is easy to do if you have a snake.
Not worth buying a snake tho because it is very unlikely that the
drain hose is blocked unless you do have a garbage disposal.

That video doesn't cover what you do if the pump isnt running after
you cancel the cycle but it sounds like you may well not be able to
replace the pump or check if the problem is with the pump itself,
the connection to it or the logic card so best to call a tech in that case.

If you do want to try it,
https://www.google.com/search?q=GE+Profile+PDWT180R10SS&tbm=vid
does have some how to swap videos from some of the parts suppliers,
but it likely would be more expensive to do a trial and error if you can't
use a multimeter to see if the pump is getting power when it is sposed
to be pumping.

Correct. Do you hear it hum when it should be pumping. It could be
jammed and still hum. If no hum, it could be a bad relay or burned out
motor. But, it probably should not try to add water if already full,
which might indicate a problem with the float switch that might be a
simple fix.

I am no expert on dishwashers - just work on mine when it has problems.
There are lots of sites with more detailed info.

Slide the machine out a bit so you can access the controls. You might
have to take out a couple screws at the top front, which attach it to
the bottom of the countertop. Get to them with the door open if they are
there.

If you don't have the manual, go to the manufacturers website and
download it so you know how to do the non-obvious functions.

Actually I am really grateful for these attempts to assist in getting my problem fixed but I did suspect some problem with the float when I found nothing substantial in the filter basket. Then it started leaking from an area which could be the inlet valve but which does seem to be closer to underneath the float!

Before I go further (and the unit is jammed hard up against the counter top and wont move), How do I check and clear a problem with the float? (I did try youtube but couldn't find anyone doing that)

Sorry, I should have mentioned, all i could find was people saying that float switches tend not to go wrong, listen for a click and if you can hear it, the float switch is probably OK

Well mine doesn't click!! If it is jammed, how do I unjam it? There doesn't seem to be any movement in it or play to unjam anything? Is it a piece of broken glass or similar underneath the top bit stopping it from moving?

Well, it's back to square one! I found a guy replacing the float but he wasn't doing any diagnosing. All He was doing was replacing some spindle inside the float with one that looks identical to the one he had taken out?? He didn't say why he was doing this.

But before that I noticed that there is a cover over the float in these GE units which doesn't actually move. So mine not moving doesn't necessarily mean that the float is jammed or that I need a new spindle.

Is there nothing to clean out in the float or is it ALWAYS that spindle (worn?) when a GE profile starts not draining? Is one supposed to assume it isnt the pump and just change that spindle?

Can you get to the float micro switch? Maybe you could connect the wires together to test the
switch. A jumper wire with alligator clips might do the trick. Maybe you could pour a little water in the bottom for the test. It's probably best not to run the pump dry for too long.

Yeah, there aren't a lot of videos on that particular dishwasher.

You likely can't and need to replace it.

It may well have broken then.

That's certainly possible.

I'd certainly try that if it's cheap. You still haven't said if the pump
can be heard running. If the float is the problem, you wouldn't
be able to hear it running because the dishwasher doesn't realise
that it's full of water and needs pumping out.

I would get the water out by using a wet and dry vacuum as the
video I posted a link to shows. It's possible that with the dishwasher
full of water, it isn't actually jammed, just can't move because it's
full of water and there is enough leverage to stop it moving when
full of water.

Well things have changed somewhat, or to put it another way, so much for my initial diagnosis!

I decided to try dismantling it after I put myself hand in the basket again and found it disgustingly blocked!!

So I started dismantling and found each bit more blocked than the last,, - so badly that gunge had managed to make its way PAST the filter basket? In fact nothing is particularly difficult until I hit a brick wall when putting the filter basket back in.

Whereas it lifted straight up, it wont go back in at all and there is no video showing this exact slightly complicated basket design. There seems to be a pipe at its left which marries up to a hole in the basket and whereas the basket lifted up straight off the pipe, it wont go straight down back on it? I tried pushing, removing, re-pushing, twisting, manoeuvering to the left etc, tapping with a hammer, - nothing seems to shift it into position..

Would it help to insert a dowel in the pipe to use as a guide? Let it stick up a few inches
above the basket bottom.

Yeah, that was the case with the video I posted the link to.

Surely the manual spells that out ?

Might do but I am trying to figure out how the basket lifted straight up if the pipe was in the way. The basket is VERY narrow so I cant see easily maneuvering a dowel through both parts. This guy has a similar filter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYSaXhnu4HY and he says at 2.27 just push it down till it locks. But my one pushes in a bit closer to the pipe that sticks up.

It must be a problem getting it past those tabs at the sides rather than worrying about the pipe. He certainly makes it look easy!

Why have you so obviously got this massive inferiority complex about Rod Speed and didn't you notice with Donald Trump that he looks at his most miserable and pathetic when he is busy shouting about one of his many well-deserved inferiority complexes?

The video I initially posted the link to does have some specifics
about putting the basket back in again after cleaning out past it.

Well let's see what happens: I discovered that I was trying to put things back out of sequence (before putting the metal tray back in)

For some reason, the basket wouldnt fit in. With tray back in, it went straight in!

So I completed and have turned on. So far all I note is that there is a lot of crackling coming from the front left corner, where the inlet valve and the float are. I'd actually be surprised if it meant anything. (Anyway, it is settling down)

Someone once told me to run the dishwasher with Affresh. I wonder how much of the gunge it would have 'dissolved'? I got this dishwasher about four years ago from my next door neighbour who used it once a month but who had bought all new appliances. I suppose it must have been 5-6 years old and I am positive it had never been cleaned.
