This is some funny stuff. Reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode
where a guy in a medicine wagon pulls into the town of Boot Hill
claiming he can resurrect the dead. He pulls a stunt to convince
the oafs of his powers. Then they line up to pay him to bring the
dearly departed back to town. In the meantime the corpse conjurer
manages in so many ways to convince his clients that maybe they'd
be better off leaving things as they are. So they line up again to pay
him to put them back. Each one who requests his "put back" services
offers and excuse for it. They never come out and say, "I just like it
the way it is", they need acceptable excuses to want to keep their
loved ones dead.

I get the same vibe with the "Who's going to visit Sheldon" discussion.
Everyone is too far away. Or as I mentioned earlier, their "travel budget
for the year is spent." I picture a scene where everyone is clamoring to
be the ambassador to Sherman, almost to the point of violence so greatly
do they wish for the honor. Then when they see they are about to get the
honor they make up all kinds of excuses to not be able to accept the honor.
This is funny stuff to me that goes beyond Sherman or this group, just in
general making excuses to not do things we claim to want to do.

We would have to very careful about dinner
seating arangements because of unresolved
'issues', but on the whole I think
most people could be at least outwardly
civil given a free trip in the deal.

Yeah, my father's side of the family was full Arab. He was not born
in this country but came here when he was only one or so. My grandparents
and their immediate relatives all had the heavy accent. I never learned the
language. I have never tried to learn anything. I hate trying.

So my father was full Arab but everyone thought he was Italian. Who
knows what flows through the blood of anyone, I don't care how carefully
and thoroughly they 'researched' their history. I have zero desire to know
my heritage, whatever the fuck that means.

You can use my airfare on Bruce; Las Vegas is just about the last
place on Earth I'd want to visit for any reason. I like quiet
and hate crowds.

Can one install AOL? Isn't AOL a service provider? How does one

You're right. I am about 5 1/2 hours away and you would be about 7 hours
from him. I gather that his wife had things under control and I don't
think my wife would be interested in meeting an internet friend when it

If I lived fewer than 3 hours away, I'd figure out how/where to go visit
Sheldon, and I'd give him a laptop with the AOL browser installed. I
even have a copy of the AOL browser software installer on my computer
(no, I don't use it).

Then again, Sheldon strikes me as prideful, and I doubt that he'd want
to show face on RFC and admit that he's not able to be at home. He also
seems to take a lot of pride in his home and property.

In fact, his wife could install AOL for him. She does so every time he
gets a new computer. wifi being available in the rehab facility is one
issue. The other is I doubt he could type on a laptop keyboard. He is
admittedly a very slow typist and that's using a standard keyboard.
Trying to type on a laptop? I don't see it happening.

Of course, I'd call first. John being the exception, but I won't do
that again, either way. I just hope that Sheldon makes it back home,

When people die the first question is usually "How did it happen?" In
the case the answer would be, "Nobody knows, we had spent the last
few weeks debating over who should go see him when suddenly word
of his passing came through." I still think it's funny, the various excuses
(not that any are needed), most involving distance, lack of time and
travel money, and a few inventive doozies tossed in randomly here and
there. I too hope the guy doesn't fade away in a facility - or anywhere.
But that doesn't mean the "RFC Goodwill Ambassador for Sheldon"
discussion is not funny.
