Interesting but as I wrote, I never had the problem. I installed mine
shortly after the house was built 45 years ago and downspout was
channeling a small drainage ditch in the newly growing lawn going
downhill in the back yard. A couple of years ago when I got new gutters
and downspouts installed I ran water through it and it was unobstructed.
Might be tempting to small critters to house in if it were flat but it
comes down at about a 45 degree angle at the end.

I have had problems with birds nesting in a drier vent and had to put a
guard over it.

I just cut a piece of 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth into a square about
the same size across as the inside diameter of the pipe, then bent the
corners over enough to push it into the end of the pipe. The corner push
against the pipe and keep it from coming out.
