I had to laugh when I read this advise column today. The second question
is a little closer to on topic for this group. It is from someone who
hosted her side of the family for a large dinner and a niece and nephew
asked if they could bring 5 guests with them. They husband said no.
"Amy" advise that Thanksgiving is a time for generosity and sharing so
it is not totally out of line to ask but that if the answer is no you
have to accept it and move on.

The first one was hilarious. A young lady is arranging her wedding and
having trouble with her finacee not totally supporting her wishes. One
is that every one dress in yellow, which IMO is asinine. The other wish
is that quests remain silent. They will not be allowed to speak during
the service or the reception. All focus has to be on the bride and groom.

Amy is less supportive than the poor fiancee. I don't know about you
guys but if I was invited to a wedding and they expected me to wear all
yellow they would have to be prepared for a very informal wear. It would
be the yellow version of something like my wife's cousin's husband's
long sleeve Tshirt Tuxedo. If it involved not being able to talk at all
during the reception I don't think I would even send the RSVP to decline.

Yeah, I read those this morning.

Frankly, I think the groom should run away at top speed.

But OTOH, it is a perfect time to wear those yellow pants I bought.
I'll look for yellow stained underwear to match.

I don't think I could run fast enough from something like that. I can't
imagine a relationship with a woman like that going that far. I can't
imagine someone like that even being asked out on a date. If it had been
a blind date I would likely leave in the middle of it.

There are times to run. I was seriously dating a really nice girl. She
was good looking and very pleasant and things were going fine. She was
still living at home with her widowed mother, whose English was so
limited and heavily accented that I could never understand her. One
night the girl started talking about wanting to get married and have her
mother live with us. The night ended early. I kissed her goodnight but
actually it was goodbye. I did not call back.

You could have done well. Built in housekeeper and every night you
could give her English lessons to improve her life. Opportunity missed,
Dave.

I suppose, but I was a young guy who had envisioned marital bliss as a
home to ourselves and not having a romance blocker 24/7. Funny thing is
that a her brother's wife lived a very lavish life style considering her
job in the classified ads department of a local newspaper and got busted
for embezzling. She got away with it for years and too them for
millions. I think I did much better.

That was pretty much Amy's advice to him (hoping he'd read it). I got a
kick out of her description when she said all the males dressed in
yellow would look like bananas. :)

These are just trolls and staged questions. Why ask one person's
opinion's these days when you can get hundreds or thousands of
opinions on the Internet in less than 4 hours?

You laughed, so you'll continue to buy the paper so you can read
the column almost every day hoping to laugh and shake your head
again. Papers these days can't be all half-assed news. They gotta
add some half-assed entertainment, too.

> Amy is less supportive than the poor fiancee.

You can't really paraphrase these things. They're totally lost
without the first-hand context.

But if HAD to go to such a weeding, I'd come mummified in police
crime scene tape and a #1 ball strapped into my mouth (though I
may rethink that last part). The only thing yellow I have in the
house is a small plastic dough scraper and the book, "Culinaria
Spain".

This is probably the biggest one:

Why write to an advice columnist? In the hopes that she will
validate your dumbassery when you know most people would tell
you you're in the wrong.

I buy the paper for news and opinion. Advice columns are just
the chocolate sprinkles on top, as it were.

The fast food coupons are kind of nice, too. I like the one offering 2 original chicken sandwiches and 2 fries.
