Do you have Kroger's there?? If you have the shoppers card you can download
their coupon for your choice of either wings or chicken breasts for $1.99 per
pound. I came home with two family packs Friday totaling just over 8 pounds.

Although I also wouldn't care to dress a chicken, I bet you would if you
were hungry enough (I would, as well). I've never seen a deal around
here for $1.99/lb, but I'd buy up some wings for that price!

I'd be more interested in keeping them as pets, plus free eggs for some
time. I might be selling 2-4 Geo Metros here soon, freeing up most of
my back yard.

A properly cooked chicken breast (and a very short time from undercooked
to overcooked), is mild but very flavorful and moist. Best to eat that
plain with just a sprinkle of salt.

Nah. I'll have it on a salad dressed with some sort of vinaigrette.
Citrus juice or vinegar improves practically any cooked meat.

I don't often cook chicken breast but if I do, it's likely to be cubed, marinated with an intense, spicy, sauce and fried at high temperature. It sure beats dry, over-cooked, and bland chicken.
We took my wife's sister and her husband to a Korean restaurant last night. That place is such a lively hole-in-the-wall that you might think you were in Korea. I had the spicy chicken wings.
They've going to the big island. They're very lucky to be there to be able to witness the display put on by Madame Pele.

I know a woman who I thought was a pretty good cook. She certainly knew
a lot about cooking and seemed to do a lot of it. She hated chicken
breasts and said they are tough, dry and flavourless. That made me
re--assess her cooking skill because she apparently doesn't know how to
cook chicken breast. Like you say, there is that small window of
doneness. They got from undercooked to cooked to overcooked very quickly.

My niece raises chickens for eggs and the amusement of her kids and the
kids she takes care of. They're a big hit.
When they quit laying eggs, I suggested she butcher them. Nope! They're
allowed to sponge chickenfeed until they die naturally...or a raccoon
gets them.

Rattlesnake tastes more like frog legs. Frog legs taste like a cross

They used to serve rattlesnake cocktails (think shrimp cocktail) at some
joint near the Denver airport. They were tasty, and I could boast about
what I ate in Denver to my "less sophisticated" friends. ;)

I will have to Google the life expectancy for pet chickens. Obviously we
can't go by the average age at death since so many of them are
slaughtered the day that it costs more for food they they expect to get
back in meat, or when it costs more to feed them than the get for the
eggs they produce.

Did it for you. Doubt they would be good eating at that age though.

Hens may live in backyard flocks for 6-8 years, and most flocks will
produce eggs for 3-4 years. The level of egg production, egg size, and
shell quality decrease each year. Most commercial layers are kept for
2-3 years as their egg production decreases after this time

They are productive creatures. My former neighbour had free range
chickens and we used to get eggs from them. Then after their
productivity dropped we got chicken. The next person who bought the
place kept to busy to do the chicken thing but the new neighbour got
some chickens last summer and we have been buying eggs from them. When
they first started laying the eggs weren't very big, but now they are
good sized eggs. They produce enough to keep their family of 4 in eggs,
we buy at least a dozen eggs a week from them and the still have lots to
sell at their road side stand.

So aside from small, medium,large,
extra large, and jumbo, finally
good sized eggs.

I've seen emu & ostrich farms.
They don't make much eggs compared
to chickens but surely there must
be a few extra eggs sometimes.

My niece has chickens too. She bought a variety of chickens that laid different colored eggs. It's pretty festive. She also raised a turkey. It didn't survive past Thanksgiving. My niece cut that turkey's life short - shes a very capable gal. That burd was so large that they had to cut it in half to fit in their oven. That would be pretty strange - eating a burd that was a buddy of yours.

My Dad used to tell a story about that.
He was born just before the 1929 Depression.

I believe her name was Anabelle.
