https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-11362447/Two-NASA-spacecraft-detect-biggest-meteor-strikes-Mars.html

NASA finds the largest crater on Mars - measuring 500-feet-wide
and caused by meteor that sent seismic waves rippling thousands
of miles across the Martian surface

.. . .

The most interesting bit was that the photos revealed
that large volumes of ICE were thrown up by the impact,
even though the meteorite hit fairly close to the
equator.

If there is THAT much ice just below the surface then
it means Mars really CAN be colonized rather easily.
Ice can become water, hydrogen, oxygen, using even
today's technological means.

CONSTRUCTING Martian cities ... that remains the big
bugaboo for $$$ reasons. The best approach is to
send construction bots and have them use the local
materials as much as possible to build large-ish
habitats. Get Musk to do it.

Actually, the RARE thing on Mars may be NITROGEN ...
a vital element for any kind of conventional, or
even synthetic, agriculture/food-making.
