Add to that a defective float or switch.

Yeah, my brain fart there because we have already
discussed that, but I should have repeated it again.

No time to read the whole thread.

My dw is a Kenmore and it woudln't drain.

It took a long time but I found that the thing on the sink with the
silver cap -- I think it's called a vacuum break -- had a chicken bone
in it, the little bone that is along the drumstick. It was easy to
remove the bone once I found it.

During t esting, I kept running the same part of the cycle, including it
seems part where it heats the water. I guess the water got hotter and
hotter because a plastic salad bowl got distorted. So I don't eat
salads anymore.

One of them' did actually show my cover, the one without the screw holding it on. But it says that there is a clip holding it on and mine doesnt have a clip either.

So the plastic of that cover must flex in some way and pull straight up.

I'm still trying to figure it out.

YES! The video "Flood Switch Assembly for General Electric PDWT180R10SS Will not fill with water" is exceptionally helpful in showing me how the cover flexes from the top, not the bottom as I had been trying.

But am I correct in thinking that the electrical switch that he changes is the problem where the "PDWT180R10SS Will not fill with water", whereas the float itself is the problem where the unit will not empty?

Likely not.

Maybe. I guess it might decide that it is empty if the float has failed.

The float/switch combination is just a backup for the timer that controls water inlet. The float triggers the float switch.
The combination doesn't control the water exit.

Its more complicated than that. It determines how long the later
solenoid is open for and how long the pump runs when emptying.,

> The float triggers the float switch.

But does determine when the pump is turned off and
may not see the pump turned on if the float and switch
never indicates that there is water to be pumped out.

But if the float and switch don't work at all, the dishwasher
should decide that there is no water getting into the
dishwasher and stop with an error code showing that.

But if the float is taken off and jiggled to make sure it isnt stuck and still the unit doesnt empty, I assume there is a problem with the pump, not the float area, whether the switch or the float.

Agreed. It shouldn't be hard to check if the switch is switching
by using a multimeter as you move the float with your hand.
Bit harder to use a multimeter with temporary wires to the
pump to see if the logic card is supplying electricity to the
pump when it should be doing that.
