I think, with the damper wide open, the fire got dangerously hot. If
the damper were shut, the fire could have cause some smoke in the house,
but it wouldn't have gotten red hot... it might have just gone out.

Very similar to a wide-open throttle
from the days before fuel injection.

I'm also not "without sin." Sorry if I come across as "bossy."

I do often tease here. However, I never backpedal. I often have to
explain that I was just kidding to those that still don't understand
my personality after all these years. You read that as backpedaling.

I remember that when I was a kid, being around elderly like that. But its too long ago to remember, now.
