The U.S. is banning the sale of communications equipment made
by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE and restricting the use of
some China-made video surveillance systems, citing an
"unacceptable risk" to national security.

The five-member Federal Communications Commission said Friday
it has voted unanimously to adopt new rules that will block
the importation or sale of certain technology products that
pose security risks to U.S. critical infrastructure. It's the
latest in a years-long escalation of U.S. restrictions of
Chinese technology that began with President Donald Trump
and has continued under President Joe Biden's administration.

However this IS of some significance, and for
once they're looking in the right direction -
towards REAL threats.

The sheer complexity of the chips used in these
things makes it possible to slip in sneak circuits
and hidden functions. Even taking the things apart
is no promise that all such tricks could be found.

Not even chip makers can completely verify their
own products - which they designed from the ground
up - to be free of weird glitches and vulnerabilities
and unexpected emergent behavior under certain
conditions. Software+hardware=Incomprehensible MESS
very often. Why do you think Winders gets updates
all the damned time - it means some hackers discovered
yet another mysterious vulnerability.

Now when the chips are made by KNOWN FOES and ESPECIALLY
when they're destined for security-sensitive uses .....

NEXT they need to look at all the 'smartphones'. The
boss of the local nuke plant probably accesses all the
controls remotely from that phone ... SO convenient .....
