my recycler 22 has no apparent fuel filter, yet parts list shows one...is this filter optional

None of the mowers of that size that I've had, including $600 Honda one,
had inline fuel filters. There might have been something not removable
inside the tank. And I never had any problems. If you are careful and
don't drop dirt in, how is any going to get in there? The bigger problem has
always been fuel going bad, gumming up the carb, etc. And a filter won't
solve that.
