Actually they DID - but only after a whole LOT
of just cause. Really impressive hydrogen blasts
going high into the sky, leaving mass residual
quantities of meltdown slag.

I blame the Japanese for putting them oceanfront
in a known, major, quake/tsunami zone.

The BETTER way is pebble-bed reactors. They cost
a little more up-front but are self-limiting in
terms of the maximum chain reaction and even
better if the facility gets torn up - the little
fuel "pellets" roll off and stop contributing.
Better yet, the "pebbles" CONTAIN the most
radioactive material within themselves. The tech
IS here now.

The reactor wasn't the problem. The problem was the spent fuel
cooling pool.
