The relevant sentence is:

Evidence was found of the building having been deliber-
ately slighted by mining.

I think the meaning of `slighted' here is:

3. To level with the ground; to overthrow; to destroy; to
raze. [In this sense raze is generally used.]

It's found often in connection with the English civil war. Captured
forts and castles were frequently ordered to be slighted, which meant
that they were damaged or demolished to such an extent as to render
them undefendable.
