OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that AI will "address some of
humanity's biggest challenges, like climate change and curing
cancer," but admitted he was "anxious" about how it could
change the way we live.

"OpenAI was founded on the belief that artificial intelligence
has the potential to improve nearly every aspect of our lives,
but also that it creates serious risks," Altman told a Senate
judiciary subcommittee hearing.

Altman proposed regulations that would include a combination
of licensing and testing requirements before AI models are
released. He also suggested labelling and an increase in
global coordination.

"I think the US should lead here and do things first, but
to be effective we do need something global," he said.

Altman argued that a new regulatory agency should impose
safeguards that would block AI models that could "self-replicate
and self-exfiltrate into the wild."

That's NOT the major threat - and Altman KNOWS it.
He'd have us looking high while The Threat comes
from below ... he can make lots of money that way.

Massive loss of "people jobs" is The Threat - and
that part is coming FAST. It will destabilize
economies, nations. Only 4th-world goatherds will
be immune.

Computers as we've known them AUGMENT human
abilities - these "AI"s REPLACE humans.

As for preventing "self-replication" - probably
too late there already. Chat and friends are
already OUT THERE, worldwide, plus the Chinese
fer sure are stealing the latest revisions and
will put 'em to all sorts of evil and poorly-
regulated purposes. Just plug 'em into an robotic
chip factory (who needs the annoying proletariat ?)
and watch 'em run with it ....
