In some microbes, up to 10% of their DNA was from
viruses.

Which begs the question ... how much of OUR genetic
material is made up of old viruses ? Animal/mammal
cells aren't so "special" really - ought to have
been infected nearly as often (the immune system
in complex orgs may have been a bit of a shield).

This finding may require modifications of the
simpler pure-Darwinian view of evolution, as
did the discovery of exogenetics and refinements
in knowledge about natural/induced mutations.

Darwin wasn't wrong - but, so far back, he couldn't
see the full picture, just as Newton couldn't see
relativistic effects.

So ... are we 'walking/conscious viruses' ?
Are the viruses the most successful things
on earth ? I'd say they've found a way
to go to the moon, Mars ..... :-)
