We are getting close to our first dinner of 2024. We are having beef
tenderloin steaks, steamed beans, potatoes and salad. Dessert will be
chocolate eclairs that my wife made this afternoon.

I think that is is interesting that my wife, who is not a baker, enjoys
making eclairs when so many people are afraid to make anything with
choux pastry.

I am still suffering sticker shock over the price of tenderloin. Holy
crap.... two tenderloins, about 6 oz each, were $45. I don't think we
will be having them again for a while. Around here lamb loin chops are
usually the more expensive option but the lamb chops we had last night
were less than 1/4 the price of tonight's beef.

Go ahead and spend $60/# on steak. You'll be dead soon enough anyway.

You got ripped off. The current price of tenderloin steaks in the
Northeastern U.S. is $19/lb. Up about $1.50 from last week, but
only $.30 up from this same week last year.

https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/lswbfrtl.pdf

You paid about $65/lb, 3.5X the going rate in the U.S. (minus
currency exchange rate).

What's the price of a head of iceberg lettuce up there this week?
Here's what we're paying this week for a shitload of unprocessed
agriculture:

https://www.ams.usda.gov/market-news/retail

Most of you won't take them time to look at these reports, but
they're the most useful, consistent, and unbiased reports ever to
come out of the USDA. And weekly.

I looked. It didn't do me much good. I buy what I want, when I want
it.

I buy skinless, boneless chicken breast every week. I discovered
that the average price for the store brand is something like
$3.99/pound. I don't buy the store brand. I buy a name brand
that is air-cooled and the pieces are smaller, for about $7-8/pound
(I don't even check the price; I'm guessing). I don't want those
giant, stringy Schwarzenegger-pecs that are available for half the price.

They're called "Woodies" in the chicken industry. You know what a
woody is, right? ... Wrong! They're breasts, not penises.
