The bag was full for Halloween. Kids were sparse. I transferred the last
ten pieces to a sandwich ziplock a couple of minutes ago.

<https://postimg.cc/LYBdXwgj>

Later, I might post a picture of my attempt at crab broth. The
Dungeness remains are getting old, and it's garbage day tomorrow.

The "Auld Hide" is at lunch, and I'm bored. :(

You have much more control than I would.
I gave up buying Halloween candy years ago, especially buying it
early. Too much sampling days before the goblins arrived and
then I'd have to go buy more. It didn't help that I always
bought what _I_ liked.

I just watched a program about gelatin, which is often made from pigs
and sometimes from cows. Apparently, it's used in a LOT of candy, but
also in things like yoghurt, pesto spread and other items that you
wouldn't expect. This isn't only a problem for vegetarians and vegans,
but also for Jews and Muslims. But it isn't a widely known fact.
Remember: you heard it here first.

I am always in a bind because he didn't have any kids come by for
decades but always thought we should have something in case. Over the
last few years we have had a few kids each year. I make sure to get
something we like in case we get stuck with them, and since we get full
sized chocolate bars the kids aren't going to complain. I can buy them
a few weeks ahead of time and not touch them. When we have leftovers it
may be a few days before we touch them.

Well, observant Jews are vary aware of what's available to them and I'd
be willing to bet there is some sort of kosher gelatin they use. Boxed
and canned goods are marked with symbols to let them know if it's ok for
them to consume. Most likely they would only use gelatin made from beef.

It's in lots of items that you'd never expect. Stuff like this:
<https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/Fale_-_Barcellona_-_194.jpg/800px-Fale_-_Barcellona_-_194.jpg>

Would you expect there to be dead pig in there?

No, but as I said they are aware of what is acceptable in their diet. They
most likely only buy from kosher candy stores who know where and what their
gelatin is made of.

The guy who was doing the report, happened to be a Dutch Muslim and he
said that he ate tons of that kind of candy as a kid without him or
his parents ever realizing there was pig in there. Pig in candy, pig
in sweet pastry, pig in certain yogurts, pig in pesto spread, it's
everywhere. Anything that needs to retain a certain rubbery firmness
during transport and shelf life is a candidate.

The operative word is "observant". My boss and his wife are Jewish yet
they adore bacon. He often grills pork chops or ribs; he brings
leftovers for his lunch. I doubt they're sitting around worrying about
gelatin. Nice to know Bruce is worried about it for them. ;)

Yes indeed your majesty. Popeye was also a typical jew as well, and he
didn't give a shit about keeping the old jewish laws, whether food taboos
or sex taboos. He ate anything he liked, and he fucked anything that moved
and had a heartbeat.

Exactly.

I remember seeing boxes of Knox gelatin in the grocery store as a youngster.
Plainly displayed on the front of the box was a cow. Have they since changed
their ingredient? I haven't a clue.

It's often pig, but can also be cow, especially if religious idiocy is
taken into account. The animal isn't always specified, in which case:
Religious Freaks Beware! Gelatin often comes from just under the
skin/hide, but also comes from bones. This isn't me talking, but the

Dang. Now I am inspired to make some fruit gelatin. We used to have it
when I was a kid. My parents had befriended an elderly English couple.
They were in their 80s and he had sailed in days of windpower and on the
ship that laid a trans Atlantic cable. They had a very lush garden and
the lady used to serve us home made fruit gelatin desserts. They were
delicious.

Gelatin comes from the collagen in bones and hides. Hooves don't have
collagen; they have keratin.

Unlikely. Feet are too easily contaminated

quote

"What is Kosher Gelatin?

"Gelatin is a widely used ingredient in many food
products, particularly those that require a gelling agent.
Gelatin has a tremendous ability to bond water chemicals
with other proteins carbs and sugars. It also has no
flavor so it is easy to add to any food product without
changing the flavor.

Unlike regular gelatin, which is derived from the collagen
of animals like pigs and cows, kosher gelatin is made from
fish bones or bovine hides that have been processed
according to Jewish dietary laws. This means that it is
free from any non-kosher substances and can be consumed by
observant Jews"

Don't know but a lot of products have the 'kosher' symbol.

Gelatin can be kosher. Beef gelatin generally isn't, though,
because the cows from which gelatin is made weren't slaughtered
or processed properly.

I promise you the ones that end up in the Knox box weren't. They
were just knocked on the head like all the other cows.

You can google "kosher gelatin" if you really want the information.
