We had a roasted chicken with roasted potatoes, roasted heritage
(yellow) carrots and steamed asparagus. Luckily we had lots of cranberry
sauce left over from Christmas, and chicken is always infinitely better
with lots of cranberry sauce.

Canned cranberry sauce?? I love the stuff!

I had a large slice of my coconut cake and that squashed any thoughts
of supper tonight.

Gawd no. I hate the canned stuff. This was home made. I love that stuff
with chicken and turkey.

I think you are supposed to have some real food before dessert. I hope
that you enjoyed the decadence.

Meat is always infinitely better without fruit.

My wife would agree with you. I love cranberry with turkey and chicken
and applesauce with pork. My wife won't even try it.

This I can grok. But mint jelly on lamb I cannot.
Actually, mint jelly on anything, but I digress.

And to round off the discussion, what about
ham and pineapple? I have sometimes thought
to make a pizza but instead of pineapple
and ham all around, purchase a can of
'fruit cocktail' and then demarcate angular
and perhaps radial divisions to try out,
for example, ham & peach, pepperoni & pear,
bacon & maraschino cherry, &c.

Unfortunatley, my wife always vetoes this
idea, and she's the only one of us who knows
how to make pizza crust.

No apple sauce with roast pork? Prunes and pork? No
duck a l'orange? Persian chicken with apricots?

Pity.

I don't like mint jelly with lamb but I do like mint sauce.

No thanks. I remember my grandfather cooking big hams garnished with
slices of pineapple and cherries in the middle. I never cared for it,
not raisin sauce with ham.

Not a fan of fruit on pizza. If your obstacle to fruit on pizza is your
wife's reluctance maybe you should learn how to make the pizza dough and
do it yourself. I make my own pizza dough so it can't be that hard.
Another option is to split the dough and make two smaller pizzas. You
can do a good one for her and a fruity one for yourself. Of your above
mentions options, bacon and pear has some appeal for me.
FWIW, the best pizza slice I ever had was goat cheese and eggplant.

Me too on the canned. Comfort food of my youth. The 'real stuff' just
doesn't taste right to me.

I don't want it on my meat, but pork and apples go well together. Last
night I made fried apples with my pork roast. No, I don't want them
with my steak.

I sometimes put some grapes in a salad.

I was raised on home made. I just can't get used to that sweet canned
stuff. I prefer cranberry sauce to have a nice tang to it.
Speaking of which, it is time to think about lunch so I am thinking a
chicken sandwich with cranberry sauce.

I like my canned cranberry slice on the side with Turkey, and tolerat3
pinapple on ham but I pull it to the side and eat it as a small side.

Many years ago there was a TV show called Over Easy hosted by Hugh Downs
and they used to have recipes for seniors. One of the recipes involved
pork shops stuffed with pitted prunes. It was a one pan meal. Slit a
pocket in a nice thick pork chop and pop a prune or two into it. Seaons
with salt and pepper and sear it on both sides and add a chopped potato
and half an onion. Add some apple juice and cover it for about 20
minutes. It was really tasty.

Dried apricots are a pantry staple for me.

I was raised on the jellied, not whole berry, canned cranberry sauce.
Love the stuff and it still has a twang to it. Homemade is ok if that's
all you have and I've had some pretty good homemade versions as well as
some simply awful ones, too.

A ham steak cooked on the grill with a side of fried apples is heavenly,
at least it is to me.

I make a bunch around the holidays, and freeze some for future use...

It's cranberries, whole chopped orange (seeded, but with the peel), some kinda nutz (pecans or walnuts), sugar, maybe some dried fruit (cherries...), and always some brandy...

Just had some on Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream last night... also good on chicken sammiches...

Not a fan of fruit with my meat, but... with lamb I do enjoy a bit of
red currant jelly or rhubarb jam. Not too much though.
