Once again, left the local Kroger with a sour taste in my mouth. Not
sure how they can run a store so poorly and stay in business. Lots
of empty shelf space. Items we normally buy have been discontinued
or moved to who knows where in the latest shelf reshuffling. Just
filling the cart was annoying.

But wait . . . it gets worse. There's two checkers in the front
end. One at a regular checkout lane with a bagger and one watching
the self checkout lanes. Lined up 5 deep at the regular checkout and
2 deep at the open self checkouts. I ask you, what is the most
important job in the grocery store? Getting the customers money!

Since we've got to go to another store to get the items we normally
buy, why continue to shop at the Kroger? We'll have to go a bit
upscale for better/more complete selection and service. But tired of
putting up with the poor performance at the Kroger.

While learning a new store, I'm sure we'll see some different
choices. Wondering what we should keep our eyes open for, looked on
the innertubes for what folks are spending their money on at the
grocery.

I'm sorry your Kroger is not up to snuff. Some of that is due to
poor management and some due to supply chain. But since the pandemic
my local store has pretty much always been kept well stocked.

I'd sure ditch them. Publix is not the best price at all, but that is
my choice to most of my grocery shopping. I'm willing to pay a few
pennies more for excellent service.

My store has no self checkout, others do. I've never had to wait for
more than one person ahead of me at the checkout. I went last Friday
morning and thought I'd be third in line, as I neared the line a voice
said "I can help you over here" as another lane opened.

As for your top 10 list, I buy 9 of them. I'm not a big mustard fan.

As for the cheese and balsamic, I get mine direct from Italy. There are
many source, this is mine
https://www.parmashop.com/en/parmigiano-reggiano.html

Best price for maple syrup and Kerrygold is BJs

I like to treat myself to good food and good service.

Sorry you had a bad experience.

There is no Kroger within any reasonable shopping distance near me so I
can only commisserate about your disappointment.

I don't need to re-stock much of the items on your list, either. Some
of them I only buy once a year. Some I don't ever buy.

There are no self-checkouts at my regular grocery store. Nearly always
baggers and open checkout lanes with cashiers and someone saying as
things move along, "We can check you out over here".

Maybe Kroger just sucks? LOL

Maybe some Kroger managers just don't care right now.

Kroger and Albertsons announced Friday that they entered an agreement
with C&S Wholesale Grocers to sell off just over 400 of their stores as
well as eight distribution centers across the country as the two giant
supermarket chains work to finalize a $24.6 billion merger.

Employee behavior is ALWAYS up to the manager and his/her standards .
Stock availability not always so much .

Not having enough checkers in the front end is a management problem.
Predicting sales peeks and valleys is an art, which is why store
managers know their sales by hour by day of the week. Since this is a
persistent problem at this store, the manager is not very good.

> Stock availability not always so much.

To some extent, out of stocks are unavoidable. You can't get items that
aren't available from the warehouse/supplier. Other times, out of
stocks are a failure to predict sales and order enough product to
satisfy demand. The multitude of empty shelf space was probably due to
poor ordering, again reflecting poor management.

My understanding is that grocery chains order from their warehouses and
can sell only what head office has. There would be an exception for local
in season produce.

I get most of my meat at a small family run place. They have a hell of a
business going. There are always at least 10 people manning the meat and
deli counter and meat cutting section. When things are slow they have
only one cashier, but a couple of the girls on the deli counter will
double as cashiers when things back up. They are amazingly efficient.
That place can be jam packed but I can pick up my produce and meat and
be checked out within 15 minutes.

About 1/3 of grocery stock is direct store delivery, eg. milk, bread,
chips, snacks, pop. The rest come from the warehouse/distribution
center, manned by corporate buyers, who are responsible for keeping the
warehouse full.

I used to leave the grocery store with three bags.
And now its two bags for the same amount of money.

Okay, but who decides which of those suppliers they are going to
contract with?

On a related note, some people are particular about the types of soft
drinks they prefer. A prime example is cola. Some people insist in Coke
while others prefer Pepsi. They might be disappointed in the go to a
place and want Coke and are told they have Pepsi. They often don't have
the option because of the agreement with the suppliers who don't want
the competition in there. Coke and Pepsi will not provide a dispenser
and deliver products unless they get an exclusive deal.

When I was a kid I worked in two different grocery stores. They bought
most dry and canned goods from the Unity warehouse but same as you said
for other items.

All the Kroger's here as well as the Walmart's and Target's stock all of the
major brands of soft drinks. I do know the Kroger's also stock some small
off brand soft drinks as well. Of course, you have to have a large store
to accomplish this and the Kroger's I've shopped at have an entire aisle,
both sides for soft drinks, bottled water, and mixers.

Mulitply 1952 prices by about a factor of 11 to get 2023 prices:

https://westegg.com/inflation/?money=.79&first=1952&final=2023

"What cost $.79 in 1952 would cost $9.23 in 2023..."

So that coffee was pretty expensive, especially considering that intlation - adjusted incomes were far lower for most in 1952 than today...

I LIKE the BUICK, btw...

Grocery stores and convenience stores carry multiple brands but
restaurants, bars etc, the places that have dispensers have only one
companies products.

My grocery store is generally good, although if something goes on
sale, there's a decent chance I'll find it out of stock on Friday
morning when I shop. It's been that way for a decade at least.

Sorry to hear that. They get mixed reviews here and most folks say the
manager makes the difference. Depending on where you are, you may have
a lot of other options. Also, bigger the city, more likely a 'loyalty
card' so if like Jill, you hate those then you may be limited. Most
are free but some (Walmart) charge a fee.

What options do you have there?

For me it's fresh veggies with a WIDE variety. Since I scratch cook
almost everything, a wide variety of basics is a reqirement.
Reasonable sales with a fairly predictable schedule comes into play as
well.

Shortly as we seege into growing season, things we eat get cheaper and
will be augmented by my own garden.

I like Monday or Tuesday before 9AM. The sales starts Thursday so they
are still well supplied Monday.

I've been amazed that the parking lot is near empty when I get there,
but leaving after 9, it is filling up fast. I really avoid Sunday.

77 cents in 1952 dollars would be $9.08 in today's $$. I buy *far*
better coffee than what is pictured there for under $6 a pound.
Cameron's breakfast blend is $8.89/12 oz bag, and I only buy it when
it's BOGO. $8.89 for 24 oz. comes out to $5.93 a pound. It's not the
best coffee out there, but it's a nice, medium light roast, and makes
delicious lattes. Food is pretty cheap these days.

Two 20 oz cans of green beans were 33 cents, which is $3.89 in today's
$$. Three 14.5 oz. cans cost me $2.07 (.69/can). In 1952, a dozen eggs
cost $.67, which is $7.90 in today's $$.

Milk, butter, pork chops, chicken...the list goes on. Food is cheap
these days.

About 1962 I worked after school at a grocery store and we used to stamp
the price on canned goods. Campbell's tomato soup was 14 cents. That
is $1.46 in today's money and the soup is, give or take a dime, very
close today. A sandwich (hoagie, sub, grinder) was 50 cents so about
$5.21 today.

If you buy a sandwich for $5.21 today, is it as good as the $5.21 sandwich
from years ago? Even walmart charges more for a decent sub sandwich.
