There are good scientific reasons to built those dams. Firstly, they generate electricity. Secondly, they help to moderate extreme climate change.

Both the polar caps are melting, causing sea level to rise. Tibet form the third pole. Glaciers there are melting too. If the water is allowed to flow completely into the sea, it will cause the sea level to rise faster.

Even without human activities causing climate change, the natural distribution of water on earth results in extreme weather. There are huge land masses and there are huge oceans of water. This results in huge precipitation of water, bringing excessive rainfall causing flooding in coastal areas while deep inland areas remain dry. Containing more water inland means slower rise in sea level and more precipitation and rainfall in inland areas.

Indians, under influence from the Americans, look at China as a threat. Whatever China does is considered a threat to India. In the case of the superdams, the Indians are being both cunning and hypocritical. India itself build dams in disputed Jammu-Kashmir which threaten to cut-off water to its arch-rival Pakistan.

This Indian professor is an idiot. But because he writes against China, his credentials from the West keep getting better.

The dam is nothing. There's a much bigger project being discussed - diverting water from Tibet to Xinjiang.
