(Once again I absentmindedly posted this set in the previous thread,
this time without even checking the subject line or cleaning up the
reminder to do so. Responses in this thread are preferred, but ones
in the other will be accepted.)

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2011-05-30,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Misplaced Modifiers, but have been reformatted
and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the
correct answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """ notation
that may appear in these rounds, see my 2021-07-20 companion posting
on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

* Game 3, Round 7 - Canadiana Arts - Canadian Artists

Please see the 2-page handout at:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/g3r7/arts.pdf

We give you the name of a canonical Canadian artist; you give the
letter of the work by that artist.

1. Emily Carr.
2. Tom Thomson.
3. Norval Morriseau.
4. Lawren Harris.
5. Alex Colville.
6. William Kurelek.
7. Paul Peel.
8. Kenojuak Ashevak.
9. David Milne.
10. J.E.H. MacDonald.

So there were 14 decoys. If you like, decode the rot13 for the
names of the other artists and give the corresponding picture
letters for fun, but for no points.

11. Jvyyvnz Orepml.
12. Wnpx Ohfu.
13. Wnpx Punzoref.
14. Orawnzva Purr Purr.
15. Tert Pheabr.
16. Xra Qnaol.
17. Cngrefba Rjra.
18. Y.Y. Svgmtrenyq.
19. Cnhy Xnar.
20. Pbearyvhf Xevrtubss.
21. Bmvnf Yrqhp.
22. Wnzrf J. Zbeevpr.
23. Puevfgvnar Csyht.
24. Ovyy Ervq.

* Game 3, Round 8 - Canadiana - Oh, Canada

All questions deal with our national anthem.

1. Within five years, when did "O Canada" officially become the
national anthem of Canada?

2. Please decode the rot13 after you have finished with the
previous question. Gur bssvpvny irefvba bs gur nagurz nccebirq

3. The 2010 Throne Speech, delivered by Governor-General Michalle
Jean, proposed changing another of the lyrics of "O Canada".
The ensuing uproar led Stephen Harper's government to withdraw
the proposal only two days later. What was the offending lyric?

4. Who composed the music for "O Canada"?

5. Canada's oldest independent record label, home since 1969
to artists including Bruce Cockburn, Randy Bachman, Lighthouse,
Rough Trade, and Murray McLauchlan, takes its name from a phrase
that appears in the national anthem. Name the record label.

6. Please decode the rot13 after you have finished with the
previous question. Juvpu Ivpgbevna cbrg pbvarq gur cuenfr

7. The motto of the """Canadian Forces Land Force Command"""
"""is""" "Vigilamus pro te", a translation into Latin of which
line from "O Canada"? Exact wording from the song required.

8. On the October 18, 2002, before the second game of the World
Series between Toronto and Atlanta, a US military honor guard
committed an embarrassing faux pas during the singing of
"O Canada". What did they do wrong?

9. Name the singer whose inspiring bilingual rendition of "O Canada"
was heard before Montreal Canadiens, Expos, and Alouettes games
through the 1970s.

10. Name the singer whose "jazzy" rendition of "O Canada" to open
the Vancouver Olympics produced mixed reactions.

This is embarrassing. If you compare the answers I'm giving this
time to the ones from when I posted this round in 2012, you'll find
that *all* of them are different. I think that if all of the expected
answers had been wrong in the original game, someone would certainly
have noticed, so I guess the error must have been mine, somehow,
when constructing the online version of the round to use here in 2012.
(I don't remember exactly how the Mods supplied the handout images to me.)

And what was the error? All of the picture letters were transposed
between pages 1 and 2 of the handout! For example, the expected
answers of B for Tom Thomson and N for Bill Reid were interchanged.
It's as if the answers A-X had been transformed by rot12 (not 13).
Sheesh! And delayed apologies to everyone who played in 2012 and
was misscored.

As in 2012, nobody tried these; I'll just present the answers as
a table.
11. William Berczy. D.
12. Jack Bush. X.
13. Jack Chambers. L.
14. Benjamin Chee Chee. T.
15. Greg Curnoe. S.
16. Ken Danby. A.
17. Paterson Ewen. P.
18. L.L. Fitzgerald. V.
19. Paul Kane. C.
20. Cornelius Krieghoff. U.
21. Ozias Leduc. H.
22. James W. Morrice. O.
23. Christiane Pflug. I.
24. Bill Reid. N.

1980 (accepting 1975-85), 100 years after its first public
performance. Nobody came within 5 years, so I accepted answers
within a 10-year leeway as almost correct. So: 1 for Dan.

"God keep our land". 4 for Joshua.

"In all thy sons command" (deemed sexist). 4 for Joshua.

While updating the round in 2021 I was surprised to learn for
the first time that this line dates only from 1913: Robert Weir
originally wrote it in 1908 as "thou dost in us command". Anyway,
Justin Trudeau's government changed the line in 2018 to "in all of
us command". Fixed!

> 4. Who composed the music for "O Canada"?

Calixa Lavallée.

True North Records.

Alfred Lord Tennyson. 4 for, er, everyone -- Dan and Joshua.

By "true" he meant "steadfast" or "loyal". To Britain, that is.

> 7. The motto of the """Canadian Forces Land Force Command"""
> """is""" "Vigilamus pro te", a translation into Latin of which

"We stand on guard for thee." (Still true, but the name of the
force has reverted to "Canadian Army".) 4 for Joshua.

> 8. On the October 18, 2002, before the second game of the World

Carried the Canadian flag upside-down. 4 for Dan.

Roger Doucet.

Nikki Yanofsky.

One of the more notable things about "O Canada" that didn't come
up in this round is that the French words (by Sir Adolphe-Basile
Routhier) and the English ones (original version by Weir, with minor
changes later) were not only written independently, they also say
quite different things. The French version contains two religious
references in 9 lines and talks about Canada protecting its people,
while Weir's words were entirely non-religious (until <answer 2>
happened, that is) and the protecting goes the other way. Look:

O Canada! Our home and native | O Canada! Land of our
land! | forefathers.
True patriot love in all thy sons | Thy brow is garlanded with glorious
command. | flowers.
With glowing hearts we see thee | As thy arm knows how to wield
rise, | the sword,
The True North, strong and free! | So it can carry the cross.
And stand on guard, O Canada, | Thy history is an epic
We stand on guard for thee. | Of the most brilliant exploits.

O Canada, glorious and free! | And thy valor, steeped in faith,
We stand on guard, we stand on | Will protect our homes and our
guard for thee. | rights
O Canada, we stand on guard | Will protect our homes and our
for thee! | rights.
