These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2011-07-18,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Misplaced Modifiers, but have been reformatted
and may have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the
correct answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """ notation
that may appear in these rounds, see my 2021-07-20 companion posting

* Game 10, Round 8 - Entertainment - Goodwill Ambassadors

Goodwill Ambassadors are musicians, actors, athletes, or prominent
business people who raise awareness for """12""" different agencies
of the United Nations. Those who promote the activities of the
UN as a whole are known as Messengers of Peace.

All of the following people are entertainers of some sort.
Name them.

1. """This Messenger of Peace is""" an American musician born
in Paris to Chinese parents, and educated in the US. He started
the Silk Road Project to study the cultures of Central Asia, and
in fact the name of one of his musical ensembles reflects this.
He """has""" contributed music to many soundtracks, including
"Master and Commander" and "Memoirs of a Geisha".

2. """This Messenger of Peace""", an American actor and director
from a show biz family, """is""" involved in trying to stop
genocide in Darfur. He flew to Africa to make the film "Sand
and Sorrow" about the crisis in Sudan, and headed rallies in
the US to force US involvement there. He won the Oscar for
Best Supporting Actor of 2005.

3. She """is a Messenger of Peace""" with a special focus on
eliminating violence against women, and has traveled to the
Democratic Republic of the Congo to advocate for her cause there.
She also founded an organization that cares for impoverished
children in South Africa, particularly those with HIV. She won
the Best Actress Oscar for 2003.

4. This American singer-songwriter, musician, and producer """is
a UN Messenger of Peace""" with a special focus on people with
disabilities. As an activist, he spearheaded the campaign to
make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday in the US.
He has won a lifetime achievement Grammy for a career that
began in 1963.

5. This American actor, singer, dancer, and comedian known for his
rapid-fire delivery and witty songs had a not-so-secret life
as the very first UNICEF ambassador from 1954 until his death
in 1987. He won an honorary Oscar in 1954, and a humanitarian
Oscar in 1982. Name him.

6. Even the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime """has"""
Goodwill Ambassadors. One """is""" an actor who changed his
name to avoid the appearance of nepotism, and eventually won
an Oscar for Best Actor for 1995. Another """is""" the Best
Supporting Actress winner the same year, for her role as a
happy-go-lucky prostitute. Name *either*.

7. The World Health Organization also has Goodwill Ambassadors.
The most famous one is a Chinese actor who, after nearly dying in
the Indian Ocean Boxing Day tsunami, founded a disaster relief
organization called The One. He's also a goodwill ambassador
for the Red Cross. Funny job for a guy who deals out pain in
martial arts blockbusters. Name him.

8. The UN Environment Program """has""" as its ambassador an
American actor and producer who """is""" known for his supporting
roles in many Steven Soderbergh films, such as "Out of Sight",
"Ocean's Eleven", and "Traffic". He was nominated for Best Actor
Oscar for 2004 and co-produced the Best Picture winner for 2005.

9. This Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Canada was born into
a prominent family, but forsook his father's profession to try
his hand in the entertainment biz. He was the face of the
"Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" program that was """recently"""
revived. He """is""" better known as the host of "eTalk".

10. Another national ambassador for UNICEF, this music promoter
helped found Flow 93.5 in Toronto, served as honorary co-chair
on David Miller's re-election campaign, and served as judge on
"Canadian Idol", working opposite host <answer 9>.
