https://japantoday.com/category/national/china's-nuclear-plants-released-tritium-above-fukushima-level-in-2022

Chinese nuclear power plants released wastewater containing
tritium in 2022 at levels up to nine times higher than the
amount expected to be found in the planned annual discharge
from Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi complex, a public
document showed Saturday.

China has criticized Japan for releasing "nuclear-contaminated
water" into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima power plant
while imposing a blanket import ban on all seafood products
from the neighboring country since the start of the discharge
in August 2023.

According to the latest China Nuclear Energy Yearbook,
radioactive materials were investigated in 2022 at a
total of 19 monitoring points at 13 nuclear power plants,
such as the Qinshan complex in the eastern province
of Zhejiang.

The amount of tritium contained in the wastewater at 15
locations greatly surpassed the maximum annual limit
of 22 trillion becquerels set for the treated water

.. . .

The "Well, THEY are worse !" excuse for Japan is only
JUST so much of an excuse.

However, this research does show that China seems to
have no care about sending lots of radioactive isotopes
from its reactors into the S.China Sea - basically
right at Japan and the Philippines. China is also
rapidly building more coal-fired power plants, which
generate their own kinds of pollution. That also finds
its way into the same waters.

Tritium decay is reasonably fast.

Initial is cut by 1/2 about every 13 years.

OK .. drink a glass :-)

BTW, the supply is CONTINUALLY REPLENISHED due
to the Chinese reactors.

Most of the millions of tons of tritium in the ocean are produced
naturally. These discharges from nuclear reactors are literally a drop in
the bucket.

Sure, but each added bit is still subject to the same decay.

Yet the environmental level keeps getting HIGHER.
Supply exceeds decay.

Due to the iffy oil situation, more and more nuke plants
are on the books. Even with concentration tricks, that'll
be too much tritium-tainted water to keep on-site for long.
I suppose you could mix it with concrete and have more-
convenient radioactive blocks ....

I strongly suspect that the concentration is miniscule, not increasing
very fast and of no consequence.

Haven't seen any data but would like to ...

Same here ... the data is SOMEWHERE. Unfortunately
it may be mostly in Japanese .....

In any case, due to the nuke shift, expect this problem
to escalate - and it's not just tritium. "Waste disposal"
has always been an issue with nuke. The Frenchies tend
to entomb it AT the reactor site, but there ARE some
risks in that.

IMHO, it should be stored at a few MILITARY BASES where
it can always be monitored/guarded. Fusing the wastes
to a glass will do a lot to immobilize the crap.

But - now here's a task - how do you INDICATE "Lethal
Materials" to, say, some stone-throwing post-modern
civ 15,000 years from now ??? Skulls and such may not
have the same meaning and 'rays' will be beyond their
understanding :-)
