Piece of 5,800lb battery pallet tossed from NASA's ISS crashes
through Florida home - and nearly kills homeowner's son

A battery from a 5,800-pound pallet crashed through a Florida
home last month

NASA is investigation the crash to determine the object's
origin

The battery is reportedly owned by NASA but the pallet was
deployed by Japan

A piece of metal came crashing through a home in Florida
that is believed to be from a 5,800-pound battery pallet
discarded by the International Space Station (ISS).

Naples homeowner Alejandro Otero was on vacation when he
received a call from his son, saying he heard a 'tremendous
sound' and there were gaping holes in the ceiling and
floor - while explaining whatever fell almost hit him.

The two-pound, cylinder object has since been recovered
by NASA to determine its origin and if found to be space
junk, the agency could be liable for damages.

.. . .

Um ... they don't buy those items from WalMart, it
will be easy to tell if it's NASA debris.

A two pound chunk of metal doesn't SOUND all that
serious, but at terminal velocity - well, it DID
punch a hole through the roof AND the wooden floor.
It wound up in a basement area (not many basements
in Florida, so they should clarify).

I wonder what happened to the OTHER bits of the
battery pack ? 5800 pounds wrapped in a pallet
is a lot of mass, more of a meteorite. NASA can't
count on anything THAT massive to burn on re-entry.
Drop something like that on Russia or China and
there could be a 'misunderstanding' ....
