A man in his 50s absconded from a New Zealand coronavirus quarantine facility, cutting through a fence to visit a liquor store, officials revealed on Friday.

Officials said the man, who arrived from Sydney, Australia on July 1, cut through ties in a six-foot fence to break out of a temporary managed isolation facility in the Distinction Hotel, Hamilton, on New Zealand’s North Island.

All people entering New Zealand must stay in managed isolation or
quarantine for at least 14 days and test negative for coronavirus
before they are allowed to move around freely, but several arrivals to
the country have so far absconded from these facilities.

Officers surrounded and cordoned off an address in Ōtāhuhu, south Auckland, after being told of the escape from the facility in Ellerslie, about 10km away (six miles) away. The person was was later arrested.

Superintendent Steve Kehoe said: “Police are liaising with the Ministry of Health on this matter to understand this person’s movements since he left the MIQ [managed isolation and quarantine] facility.

“Staff responding to this incident are dressed in full PPE. All police
staff who have responded to this incident have been following all
health guidelines, in accordance with police Covid-19 procedures.”

The government’s straightjacket-like COVID-19 restrictions run counter
to New Zealand’s multidecade history of strong and robust economic
freedom.

Since as long ago as April 2020, small business owners have been
complaining about these restrictions, saying they feel like
“sacrificial lambs.”

The government, under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, may be governing over a relative swan song in economic freedom now, as it seems to be steering the country toward more dark and troubled waters of significantly less economic freedom.

The mask, vaccine, and isolation mandates in New Zealand have been some of the strictest and most restrictive in the world.

For long periods of time, New Zealanders have not been allowed to go within the proximity of those who do not live in the same household, not even to be with their blood relatives.

It has been devastating to the tourism businesses, along with a heartbreaking number of other types of businesses.

Some have found it virtually impossible to find a job. One woman recently told The Wall Street Journal that after traveling all around the country, she has given up on her job search and has now joined a protest, which for weeks has been camped around the nation’s capital.

The regulations have been devastating for small business owners who do not agree that they should pay the high price of losing their businesses to help the government prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As the months of economic freedom-crushing regulations on their
businesses have worn on, once thriving businesses have permanently
