These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2012-06-12,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of What She Said and/or of Smith & Guessin', but have
been reformatted and may have been retyped and/or edited by me.
I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2021-07-20
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

** Game 6, Round 9 - Science - Name That Nebula

NASA and the Hubble Space Telescope have given us many spectacular
images of nebulas. These interstellar clouds of dust and gas
(remember Game 1, Round 9?) often have descriptive names like the
Barbell Nebula and the Boomerang Nebula. In this round, we'll
give you the name of a nebula and you'll tell us the number of
the corresponding image on the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/6-9/nebula.jpg

1. Spirograph.
2. Cone.
3. Rosette.
4. Witchhead.
5. Eskimo.
6. Butterfly.
7. Bubble.
8. Horsehead.
9. Jellyfish.
10. Cat's Eye.

Now decode the rot13 if you would like to try the decoys for fun,
but for no points.

11. Peno.
12. Rntyr (Cvyynef bs Perngvba).
13. CnpZna.
14. Gevsvq.
15. Irvy.

** Game 6, Round 10 - Challenge - MORE "What is Missing?"

As in Round 4, we give you a list and you tell which element
is missing. Only this time most of them aren't geography.

* A. Arts & Literature

A1. The Group of Seven artists: Franklin Carmichael,
Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer,
J.E.H. MacDonald. (Hint: "Vera".)

A2. The 3 main lake poets: Robert Southey, William Wordsworth.

* B. Science

B1. The 6 types of quarks: up, down, strange, bottom, top.

B2. The 3 types of walking methods, or feet styles, of mammals:
digitigrade (walks on pads and toes), unguligrade (walks
on tips of toes). (Give the name or description of the
other one.)

* C. Geography

C1. The 8 Ivy League colleges: Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth,
Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale. (Hint: Andy Bernard could
tell you it's the newest one established.)

C2. The 5 nations with territory bordering the Arctic Ocean,
excluding seas such as the Beaufort Sea: Russia, Denmark,
Canada, United States.

* D. History

D1. The 5 "D-Day" invasion beaches: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword.

D2. The 5 operational (space-capable) space shuttles: Columbia,
Discovery, Challenger, Endeavour.

* E. Entertainment

E1. The 4 families of brothers with star billing in the movie
"The Long Riders": Carradine, Quaid, Guest.

E2. The 6 actors who played James Bond in movies, *not* counting
anyone in "Casino Royale" (1967): Sean Connery, George
Lazenby, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig.

* F. Sports

F1. The """5""" North American summer Olympics host cities:
Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montreal, Atlanta.

F2. The 4 WHA teams that joined the NHL in the 1979 merger:
Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers. (Give the
name as it was then; the full name is required for full
points.)

Game 6 is over and JOSHUA KREITZER has won by a considerable margin.
Hearty congratulations!

This was the second-easiest round in the original game, after
current events.

> 1. Spirograph.

#14. 4 for Dan Tilque. 2 for Dan Blum.

I sure see why #7 was a popular wrong answer.

> 2. Cone.

#5. 4 for Joshua and Dan Tilque.

> 3. Rosette.

#8. 4 for Joshua. 3 for Dan Tilque.

> 4. Witchhead.

#10. The head is in profile, facing toward 2 o'clock. 4 for Joshua
and Dan Tilque.

> 5. Eskimo.

#4. He's looking toward you from inside a fur-lined hood.
3 for Dan Tilque.

> 6. Butterfly.

#11. 4 for Joshua and Dan Tilque. 2 for Dan Blum.

> 7. Bubble.

#1. 4 for Dan Blum and Dan Tilque. 3 for Joshua.

> 8. Horsehead.

#2. 4 for everyone -- Dan Blum, Joshua, Dan Tilque, and Erland.

> 9. Jellyfish.

#13.

> 10. Cat's Eye.

#7. 4 for Dan Tilque.

> Now decode the rot13 if you would like to try the decoys for fun,
> but for no points.

> 11. Crab.

#6. I've never seen it rendered in those colors before.

> 12. Eagle (Pillars of Creation).

#15. Joshua got this.

> 13. PacMan.

#9.

> 14. Trifid.

#3.

On one episode of the original "Star Trek", an image of this nebula
was superimposed on the scene to the accompaniment of alarmed music
as a special effect to indicate a transition to an alternate universe.

> 15. Veil.

#12.

> ** Game 6, Round 10 - Challenge - MORE "What is Missing?"

> As in Round 4, we give you a list and you tell which element
> is missing. Only this time most of them aren't geography.

> * A. Arts & Literature

> A1. The Group of Seven artists: Franklin Carmichael,
> Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer,
> J.E.H. MacDonald. (Hint: "Vera".)

Frederick Varley.

> A2. The 3 main lake poets: Robert Southey, William Wordsworth.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge. 4 for Dan Tilque.

> * B. Science

> B1. The 6 types of quarks: up, down, strange, bottom, top.

Charm. 4 for everyone.

> B2. The 3 types of walking methods, or feet styles, of mammals:
> digitigrade (walks on pads and toes), unguligrade (walks
> on tips of toes). (Give the name or description of the
> other one.)

Plantigrade (walks on entire foot, so even the heels touch the
ground). 4 for Dan Blum and Joshua.

Among larger animals there is a strong correlation between walking
style and eating style:

digitigrade - carnivorous (e.g. cats)
unguligrade - herbivorous (e.g. cattle)
plantigrade - omnivorous (e.g. cattlemen)

Some plantigrade species can switch to digitigrade on occasion:
human sprinters do this at the start of a race.

> * C. Geography

> C1. The 8 Ivy League colleges: Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth,
> Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale. (Hint: Andy Bernard could
> tell you it's the newest one established.)

Cornell. 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

> C2. The 5 nations with territory bordering the Arctic Ocean,
> excluding seas such as the Beaufort Sea: Russia, Denmark,
> Canada, United States.

Norway. 4 for everyone.

Finland once qualified as well, but they lost that bit of
coast to the USSR in the 1940s.

> * D. History

> D1. The 5 "D-Day" invasion beaches: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword.

Juno. (The one where the landing force was Canadian.) 4 for
Dan Blum, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

> D2. The 5 operational (space-capable) space shuttles: Columbia,
> Discovery, Challenger, Endeavour.

Atlantis. 4 for Dan Blum and Dan Tilque. 3 for Joshua.

The first shuttle to fly in the atmosphere was Enterprise; the
original plan to make this one space-capable after some test flights
was canceled due to cost. There was also a full-size mock-up shuttle,
named Pathfinder.

> * E. Entertainment

> E1. The 4 families of brothers with star billing in the movie
> "The Long Riders": Carradine, Quaid, Guest.

Keach.

> E2. The 6 actors who played James Bond in movies, *not* counting
> anyone in "Casino Royale" (1967): Sean Connery, George
> Lazenby, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig.

Timothy Dalton. 4 for Dan Blum and Joshua.

> * F. Sports

> F1. The """5""" North American summer Olympics host cities:
> Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montreal, Atlanta.

St. Louis (1904). (Still true.) 4 for Joshua, Dan Tilque,
and Erland.

Calgary had the Winter Olympics (in 1988).

> F2. The 4 WHA teams that joined the NHL in the 1979 merger:
> Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers. (Give the
> name as it was then; the full name is required for full
> points.)

Quebec Nordiques. 4 for Joshua and Erland.

They defected to Denver in 1995 and became the Colorado Avalanche.
