Hello, all

What good verbs do you know for expressing a failure to
meet a deadline, i.e.:

The deadline is... lost/unmet/violated/..?

I can't seem to pick a right word. `violated' is too
long a formal, `lost' probably wrong, `unmet' ambuguous
(not met yet) and compound (has a prefix).

"missed" is the most usual in my experience.

In mine too. You either meet or miss a deadline.

Steve Hayes:

Thanks for the confimation. In Russian, one either ob-
serves or violates/nonobserves a deadline, but we also
have a single verb that means "to miss a deadline".
Yesterday's game of What? Where? and When?[1] had a
question about such "lingvo-specific" words that are not
translatable as a single word in Russian. Examples in-
cluded the Japaneese word for the pleasure due to per-
ception of Sun rays, a Spanish word for a pleasant cov-
ersation at table after a meal, and some Netherlands
word that I forget.

The dependent clause must be descriptive. To make it
so, substitute `which' for `that' and put a comma after
`words'.
