General greetings!

In a book on witchcraft I read the word `compass'
in a meaning strange to me: it was clearly not
about going round anything. The most probable
meaning in my instance is, as set down in 1913
Webster --

To purpose; to intend; to imagine; to plot.

Compassing and imagining the death of the king
are synonymous terms; compassing signifying the
purpose or design of the mind or will, and not,
as in common speech, the carrying such design
to effect. --Blackstone.

Yet the word allegedly has a single origin, from
Latin compassus/compassare. How can the meaning
of plotting or imagining have emerged from it? It
it not, instead, a case of a homonym, e.g. from
`compassion'?

If it's *that* Blackstone, he was probably offering a specialised legal
definition.

I would use it to mean "bring about", and derive it from "passus", step,
not "pati" (past partiple "passum"), suffer. The Online Etymology
Dictionary agrees.

The key word is "plot". One "plots" a course and to do so properly one
needs a compass. It seems a pretty short hop from there to "imagine".

Your explanation works as a mnemonic rule, but
certainly does not reflect the actual process of
ramification whereby that meaning sprung up.
