Hello,

What say you of the use of `exclude' below, from
Thomas Browne's "Enquiries into Vulgar and Common
Errors":

Those tormented spirits that wish the mountains
to cover them, have fallen upon desires of mi-
nor absurdity, and chosen ways of less improba-
ble concealment. Though this be also as ridicu-
lous unto reason as fruitless unto their de-
sires; for he that laid the foundations of the
earth, cannot be excluded the secrecy of the
mountains, nor can there anything escape the
perspicacity of those eyes, which were before
light, and in whose optics there is no opacity.

Does it mean that in active voice one can write
e.g.:

She excluded me the privacy of her bedroom.

Or is it archaic, and modern English requires
`from', i.e.:

...cannot be excluded from the secrecy of...

I'd flag that as an error albeit neither a vulgar nor a common one. I
can imagine it being accepted usage at one time however.
