Hello, all.

Can you justtify and interpret Stevenson's apparently
inconsistent use of `whould' and `should' in one of
his Valima letters:

And yet God knows perhaps this intercourse of writ-
ing serves as well; and I wonder, were you here in-
deed, would I commune so continually with the
thought of you. I say "I wonder" for a form; I
know, and I know I should not.

He asks "would I commune" because he is not making the southern British
distinction between "shall" and "will". Scots don't, I believe, and
neither do most North Americans.

He is using "should not" to mean "ought not to".
