I assume Cutter's account of the father and origin of Mr. Joseph-1 Hills of Mass., who arrived 1638, is basically accurate:

"Joseph Hills, the immigrant ancestor of the Hills family, was born in the parish of Great Burstead, Billericay, Essex, England. The record of his baptism reads, "1602, March, Joseph Hilles the sonne of George, was baptized the third day." His father was a linen draper; and his mother was Mary Symonds, widow of William Symonds. They were married October 13, 1596. Joseph Hills married, July 22, 1624, in Great Burstead, Rose Clark, and there his elder children were born. ..."

I suggest the following marriage record, from Great Leighs, Essex, a parish also in the orbit of the Essex town of Chelmsford (but on the opposite side of it from G. Burstead /Billericay), could be of interest:

[Great Leighs, Essex]
George Hills & widow Ipse ... 25 Oct. 1601

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=osu.32435078688991&view=1up&seq=122&skin=2021

I wonder if Ipse could be a form of Epes or Eppes?

If Joseph was baptized 3 March 1602/3 this would avoid the awkward timing of a birth coming only six months after the marriage. Although, on the other hand, perhaps the remoteness of the wedding venue can be explained by a desire to be away from prying eyes at Great Burstead.

The Kellogg family had ties to Great Leighs, Essex, including one who married there to the widow Tabitha Hills.

Although I suppose it's not the Latin word, meaning the same last name (Hills)?

There is some stuff on this family in the 4th volume of _Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton_.

"Our first certain ancestor in this line, Joseph's father George Hills, was of an age to be the son of John and Martha (___) Hills of East Mersea, Essex. While George named his last daughter Martha, there is no conclusive evidence to ..."

"This first marriage [of Mary (___) Symonds] probably lasted no more than ten years, since Mary had children with George Hills until 1611. Wiliam was evidently the son of James 'Symonde' of Billericay, yeoman, whose 27 May 1580 will left a considerable estate to his underage son, William."

That's all I can read from snippets. Strictly speaking, however, maybe all we know is that "some Mary" was having children with Geo. Hills until 1611..

Amazingly, or amazingly coincidentally, the _Registers of St. Olave, Hart Street, London, 1563-1700_ record the burial on "Jan. 16 [1580/1 of] mother Hilles wife of George Hilles, draper."

His father was a linen draper; and his mother was Mary Symonds, widow of William Symonds. They were married October 13, 1596. Joseph Hills married, July 22, 1624, in Great Burstead, Rose Clark, and there his elder children were born. ..."
