The Alpha (Asroc) used the MK 44 and later the 46 as the warhead. It
was just a rocket propelled torpedo.
I was the mount captain for the Mk 44s. I knew quite a bit about them
55 years ago. We had 2 triple tube mounts and 4 live fish p[lus a
practice <inert> one. They were totally autonomous after launch. I
called them our doomsday weapon because if "this is not a drill" I was
supposed to pull the salt water plugs and manually put in presets I
got from CIC. The motors were salt water activated. When the 02 deck
went underwater, the fish would go kill the sub that killed us.
The WHECs also had hedgehogs in addition to the tubes.
Hedgehogs were actually pretty cool for the early 40s. They threw a
warhead with about 45 pounds of RDX and only went off if they hit
something, then they all went off. That didn't disturb the water on a
miss. It was way better than depth charges that boiled the water every
time you rolled one and depended on setting the depth right to even
have a chance.
I was on a couple of 210s with 3" 50s but the WHEC cutters all had 5"
38s.
That mount was the best place to go and chill when you were on station
at sea. You really wanted to be up in the mount captain chair tho.
When blue water broke over the mount, the gasket around the barrel
flange leaked. Lower in the mount might get your book wet. ;-)

The WAVPs were diesel and carried enough to go around the world. (Old
sea plane tenders that had big fuel tanks). They could also start up
and go pretty fast.

A retired Rear Admiral is working on a book about ITASS that is
scheduled for publication later this year. He interviewed me
via e-mail last year regarding my recollections of being
involved in the project. Surprised me because at the time I
was involved I was a junior enlisted crew member. But, I was
promised a copy of the book when it is released.

Just about all US Navy combat ships are now turbine powered (or
nuclear). The USS Spruance (DD-963) was the first US destroyer
that used gas turbine power, commissioned in 1975. It's range
was:
6,000 nautical miles at 20 knots and
3,300 nautical miles at 30 knots

It was decommissioned in 2005. I enjoy reading about the history of
Navy ships and what becomes of them. Some are transferred to
foreign countries for use in there Navy's (i.e. the USS Surprise
was transferred to the Turkish Navy), some are sold for scrape
and some are used as target practice and sunk. This was the fate
of the USS Spruance. She was sunk as a target for aircraft launched
Harpoon missiles on 8 December 2006.
