Could you give us one or more reliable sources that claim this family existed?

I don't know much about efforts to trace the family in England, although it does "ring a bell," but the Hardwicks are fairly well attested to in colonial Virginia records in the 17th century -- if I remember correctly you can find a fair amount of information in the Westmoreland County (VA) records (wills, land transactions, etc.) as well as information on births, marriages, and deaths in the Cople Parish records. To be honest, however, it's been years since I last researched the family and I've no idea what if anything may have been published or made available online regarding the family prior to immigrating to Virginia. I've run across online claims linking them (of course) to Bess of Hardwick, but never took it seriously (the utter lack of documentation doesn't bode well...). Somewhere in my records I may have something that might provide some clue as to where the proposed link to Somerset first popped up, but it may take me a little time to track down.

It's in the JSTOR collection, which I have access to through my university. Here's the link via a simple Google search https://www.jstor.org/stable/1921507, but unless you have access to JSTOR I'm not sure how much use that will be. It might also be available through Google Scholar (the journal that is), but that may also be behind a paywall (i.e. right back to JSTOR).

Anyone can read most older material on JSTOR for free. On the right side of the linked page, click the box saying "Alternate access options" and select "Read Online : Read 100 articles/month free" and it will let you log in using a Google, facebook, etc account to set up one on JSTOR, and off you go.. You cannot download this material, but if you really want it you can take screenshots and compile them into a printable file or PDF. Likewise, if you somehow find yourself needing to read more than 100 in a month, you can always create a new Google account.

In this case, however, one needn't go through this. Published in 1923, it is out of copyright in the US, and freely downloadable on HathiTrust:

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.31210005150287&view=1up&seq=105

plus a brief followup note:
