Hello,

As I was updating my research notes on the Dyott family, I noticed that HOP has two articles about the same Anthony Dyott, MP, but with different attributed parentage. It seems to me that John Dyott who married Catherine Weston is being conflated with his son, John Weston who possibly married Margaret Hill instead. Could you please help confirm this assumption?

According to this HOP article from 1981, Anthony Dyott was the "1st s. of John Dyott of Freeford, bailiff of Lichfield, by ?his 1st w. Margaret, da. of Robert Hill of Lichfield"

This is supported by Weston-Cave Heraldic Pedigrees by William Segar, Knt., Garter King of Arms, 25 Nov 1633, Add. 18667, folio 25 verso as reproduced in Weston Pedigree Reconsidered: A Review of Documentation Provided by the College of Arms. In the same book, a letter from Dr. John Weston identifies three sons of "Katherine Weston married to Mr. Diott of Lichfield": Anthony Diott...of Inner Temple, deceased; John Diott of Lichfield, deceased; Arthur Diott of Lichfield, deceased.

This pedigree in A Survey of Staffordshire Containing the Antiquities of that County, supports this and contradicts the pedigree above from the same book.

I have not focused on the Dyott family, but the records you cite suggest to me that you are correct.

I wrote to HOP shortly after my wife and I published our book, Weston Pedigree Reconsidered (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BL5B6YN5/), recommending an update to the biography on Richard Weston, Justice of the Common Pleas. The current HOP biography says he was probably a son of Richard Weston of Colchester, Essex, citing Waters, and repeating the false claim that the Weston pedigree was a fabrication. HOP's biographies on the two brothers of Justice Weston -- James Weston of Lichfield and Robert Weston, Lord Chancellor of Ireland -- correctly identify their parents as Cecily Neville and John Weston of Lichfield. I received a kind response, complementing our book, noting that their online biographies must be in line with their printed publications, and promising to refer to our book when reviewing the biography for update. All this leads me to believe they would welcome your observation.

Thank you for your feedback and advice, I'll be sure to reach out to HOP since the Weston pedigree confirms the 2010 HOP article. Do you recall if a version of the pedigree shows all three of Catherine Weston/Dyott's sons? For example, you mentioned that "Weston Pedigree, Illuminated Genealogy of the Family of Weston of Weston-under-Lizard, co. Stafford, 25 Nov 1633, Add. 74251A, folio 19 recto...does continue the line of Joan Dyott and her husband, Richard Creswell." Does that page show her siblings and their spouses by any chance?

Hi Andrew,

The Weston pedigree includes only one of Catherine Weston (Dyott's) sons, Antonius Dyott, followed by his son, Richard Dyott, and does not include the siblings of Susannah Creswell.

Add. 18667 folio 25 verso shows Joan Dyott and her husband Richard Creswell, along with Joan's brother Antonius Dyott. On folio 25 recto, appears Richard Dyott, son of Antonius Dyott. No other Dyott's are included.

Add. 74251A folio 19 verso shows Joan Dyott and her husband Richard Creswell, along with Joan's brother Antonius Dyott. On folio 19 recto, appears Richard Dyott, son of Antonius Dyott, next to Suzana Creswell, daughter of Joan Dyott and her husband Richard Creswell. No other Dyott's are included.
