The "What is it?" is easy. It's the "Why?" that's worth a discussion.

To make it easier to carry in your pocket or maybe just because the
inventor wanted to have some fun?

Then there's this one, which sort of makes sense, even if it is a bit over
the top.

I once found a "What is it" that turned out to be an ice pick -
there are many dozens of ice pick "designs" & therefore patents !

This is what I usually grab for a sliver :

This pin has dug out many a splinter. Many years' worth. That's just a small sample of
the holes in the drywall behind my workbench. It's one tool that *always* get put back
where it belongs. ;-)

I find the sewing pins a bit too bendy - I keep a sewing needle
with the tweezers - but it's not easy to hang-on-to ..
... perhaps there's an idea for a new patented invention -
a handy dandy easy-to-hold needle holder !
.. one that old calloused & arthritic fingers can grip.

a like new utility knife blade works best for me...pick it out with the sharp blade, or cut along side if it doesn't cooperate with the point...
Of course there is always ichthammol for the feint of heart...

Handy to carry in your pocket. Have you ever carried regular tweeters
in your pocket?

I needed a pair some time back when I got a narley splinter from a piece
of Ipe at the limber yard.

That's what this patent is for:

https://www.freepatentsonline.com/4494543.pdf

There are other tweezer patents with built-in needles. The problem I see
is that if you damage the needle, you may have reduced the item to a pair
of tweezers that simply weighs more than many others. ;-)

My paternal grandfather used to invent things like the tweezers I
posted the pictures of. I found those in a box of my dad's things
but it turns out that they aren't one of Grandpa's patents. Grandpa
had a patent for a laboratory-quality check-valve, a nut-cracker and
pick set, a handle for removing cupcake pans from the oven and
few others.

A pin vise works great. https://www.mcmaster.com/pin-vises/

I also remember from years ago that student dissecting kits included a
sharp needle on a stick.

If you had that pair "some time back", would they have been in your pocket
when you needed them?

It's great that they are handy to carry around, but would you?

Good question. But most certainly I would have had a pair in my
truck's deep dark console along with my work gloves and Kleenex, hand
sanitizer, tape measure, etc. Having the pointy end covered would
prevent me from finding them the painful way.

Just as I grab the tape measure as a minimum, when buying wood, I might
also grab the tweezers and put those in my pocket.

I always carry a single lock blade pocket knife. My previous knife had
been sharpened so much that the point no longer was inside the knife
when closed. I had to cut/stick the end of my finger more than once to
steer me towards a new knife. So I do carry sharp objects that are not
always in a safe mode.

I guess until you have the need you don't really see the need.
