If I set an anchor at the 20-point O will easily enter his home board
by jumping past me. I think it's better to keep one of them back to
protect against that.

I encountered a similar position recently (did I post it?).
X has a much stronger board; O has escaped and has no structure.
I think X should not anchor up. There is not much danger of
getting attacked and he wants good board coverage. Maybe just
8/4 6/3 building his board. 23/20 8/4 is also possible but I'm
not sure that's better---it eyes the outfield but also gives O
more jokers.

And the answer is "do something else". Anchoring is a whopper with
cheese AtS and is eighth best according to XGR++.

Note that anchoring wins more games and loses fewest gammons, so would
be correct at GS or DMP. AtS, the price of gammon is not particularly
elevated with the cube in the center, but there are sufficiently more
gammons to be had by staying back and exchanging hits that the DMP play
is too weak.

One way to think about it is that anchoring effectively neutralizes X's
superior board. See variants below for same position at different scores.
