The roof of that building across the street from the US embassy in
Saigon wasn't pretty either.
Pulling out of any active war zone is never going to be pretty and the
most dangerous job is the one of that guy who is the last one on the
helicopter.
My biggest complaint in all of these is how much hardware we leave
intact on the ground for the bad guy. Don't these folks have
explosives and thermite grenades?
I guess we need to feed the military industrial complex making new
stuff.

It was outrageous how easily the Afghanistan Army handed over all the weapons without a fight.

South Vietnam was actually a government. The Kabul cabal was just the
warlord of the week and fell in with whomever looked like they were in
charge.
We should have taken all we could and destroyed the rest in
Afghanistan.

OTOH I doubt anyone really thought the ARVN was going to win either.
It just gave us a little more graceful exit but it still ended up in a
"run like hell" sort of way when they fell. Two marines still died in
Saigon in April of 75, 2 years after our official exit from the war.
