I had real tacos while in Puerto Vallarta. Taco Bell has some
similarities. But as Taco Bell freely admits, they serve Mexican

When I was in Mexico, and it's been decades, so this MIGHT be
outdated, all TACOS were served as soft shell. Not one folded tostada
to be seen. Further, none offered ground meat. Each one was diced.
And while refried beans were available as a side, they weren't a
part of the taco itself. I don't recall cheese being available, but
they did have lettuce.

In places like TJ, they offer folded tostada. This is more for
the sake of tourists than anything else. If the people who visit have
been raised to think a folded tostada is a taco, the people of Tijuana
will sell it to them.

I'm remembering a frozen treat, that may still be available,
called a Choco-Taco. There is absolutely NOTHING Mexican about it,
aside from the word taco. Of course, Jenny and zelgensetter will both
claim it is Mexican food, since it has the word taco in it.
Or they could admit they've been lying the whole time.

They will sell you anything. In Tijuana, the shops along Revolucion would
happily sell you "silver" which was actually silver plate. you had to go
into the 99% store to get real silver for the most part. (It's actually
not 99%, like gold it would be too soft for daily wear and tear)

Same goes with the food along there. I stuck to eaither the vendors I knew
or restaurants I could vouch for. (The late and much lamented Tilly's on
5th and Revolucion is greatly missed, 7.99 for a rack of ribs and sides!)

When I used to live at the border, the tacos sold off the street, and also
in many restautants, in Mexico were soft shells and involved slicing the
meat off a vertical broiler. Really good and quite juicy, the excess fat
drips off.

They're fast food too. Not that Jenny wouldn't perform another 6 month
hissy fit about something he knows nothing about...

Choco-Taco is a kind of Klondike(tm) bar and they still sell them here in
the east coast. You may find them at Walmart and Terget stores if nowhere
else.
